I used to frequent a forum, www.rcgroups.com , that gave you the option of ignoring a user. By enabling this feature the thread would indicate that your ignored member had posted but would not show the text the selected offending member had posted. I’m happy to say that I only felt the need to add one member to my ignore list. I find myself spending more time on Arfcom and I wish this feature were available to me (especially in General Discussion). The process for adding a member was quite simple. You opened their profile and at the top you were given the choice to add the member to your buddy list or add the member to your ignore list. If you wished you also could remove the user from your ignored list. Am I the only one that would use this feature? Could the feature be added? How much support does this issue need before it’s considered? Thanks in advance Edit to add Poll |

Speaking strictly from a technical point of view it would take a considerable amount of additional code, DataBase space and server resource overhead. This is not a chatroom, it's a BBS, if there is a post in a thread posted by a particular individual that you don't want to read then get in the habit of looking to the left and if you see that individuals name/avatar then scroll down to the next post. It is just that easy. |

OK let me ‘splain why I think it’s worth the time and effort of all the extra code. Many posters are accused of being trolls on an almost daily basis. Arfcom loves a good troll hunt and they can be very entertaining, but why not give the members a chance to moderate their very own arfcom. Don’t like me and think I do nothing but spew filth? Click the button to Ignore me and you’ll never hear from me again unless you choose to. The Moderators and Staff certainly have their hands full here and I think it might lighten their load a bit. My own COC doesn’t necessarily parallel Arfcom’s COC. If I take offence and get all butt hurt over something I read I can choose to Ignore the offensive member, never hear from them again and make Arfcom a bit nicer for me. I would create my own personally tailored Arfcom. I also think that, if added, the Ignore feature could actually conserve bandwidth. Instead of all the troll accusations being posted you could choose to Ignore the member without posting a word. Do a search on “troll” and see how many examples pop up. If enough users actually employ the Ignore feature instead of slinging troll accusations it might just conserve bandwidth. My friend always wished for a “Magic Wand” that you could touch people with and send them to a parallel universe completely unharmed. If someone pissed you off or offended you just touch him or her with the wand and –Poof- they were out of your hair. If the day comes and you find yourself all alone after you’ve –Poofed- the last person on the planet you could just tap yourself with the wand to arrive in the parallel universe and begin to –Poof- people all over again. I found that concept as amusing and desirable. I guess I wish it were possible here. I think the Ignore User Feature would make an excellent perk for being a Team Member. Now this is the first poll I've posted so VOTE, It's the American thing to do!!! |
I'm perfectly capable of just scrolling past the asshats... and SOME I USED to consider to be individuals who I WOULD place on an "ignore list" are now quite okay by me. Now there ARE annoying troll types, but they seem to have a short lifespan here, by in large

Exactly, plus there ARE people who evolve and whereas when you first "meet" (notice) them on the board you think, "what an asshat!" then months later you accidentally read one of their posts - then realize WHOSE post you are reading and you're like, "wow... I can't believe that s/he said that... that is so cool... I thought s/he was an asshat.... Huh..." |
