TLDR version
Professionalism is often another word for retaliation. Kevin Bass wrote an opinion article in Newsweek criticizing COVID policies and was vocal on social media. After going viral, senior administrators at his public medical school described the speech as concerning to the institution. Soon afterward, Bass was subjected to a series of professionalism allegations that were vague, non-specific, and procedurally difficult to contest. He was eventually dismissed from medical school. Through FOIA requests, Bass has now obtained internal emails and documents showing coordination among administrators following his protected speech. Taken together, these materials present a prima facie paper trail of retaliation and First Amendment violations under the pretext of professionalism concerns. In administrative practice, vaguely defined professionalism often functions as the mechanism by which institutions retaliate when they cannot discipline directly based on policy or law. |
