You actually can produce a pure badger knot replicating the feeling of something soft-tipped if it is packed sparse and tall and flat-topped as possible but that’s not how the Simpson's pure badger units are created, and the movement of such a knot would not be in Simpson's character; they want ’em scrub-EEE, and that’s indeed how the Pure Badger models behave.
Most Simpson's brushes come in their standard-issue “Best Badger”, a longer hair with a ~softish, creamy tip. Due to their density and the hair’s minimum quality threshold, Simpson's ‘Best Badger’ brushes actually aren’t a terrible value in high quality European/English brushes (Simpsons tend to be the most costly per millimeter of knot among the EU/UK brushes). The Simpsons Best Badger’s peaks in nominal softness variance would be pretty tough for anyone to distinguish from the Super Badger, at least by feel. Pity that those Best Badger zeniths don’t always look as pretty as the Super Badger hair. Nonetheless, I personally reject the notion that the minimum “Best Badger” quality’s not very good but that’s easy to say when one’s skin’s sensitivity level’s not pegged to supreme. Simpson's “Super Badger” has a notably softer tip than the “Best Badger”, along with superior water and heat retention qualities that give a more luxurious, enveloping experience. It is referred as having a bit more ‘presence of knot’. For most people, the significant cost penalty towards “Super Badger” will not return similar-amplitude improvements of minimum comfort. Others (the minority, I believe) will find even the high water marks of “Best Badger” stock scratchy & uncomfortable, with Super Badger completely bereft of these undesired characteristics. Thus, for that minority, there’s no value at all to be had in Simpson's Best Badger, they’d just be buying an expensive uncomfortable brush.
