Will be working on this as time permits. Home life seems to take priority over hobby life nowadays.

For fucks sake man.
Put it together first then do the step by step so we can get all jelly.

Ha! I'll take pics throughout the build. It's rather small, I haven't found a box mod I liked yet due to size, when I saw this I jumped on it.

[#3]
You do realize that we need to come to my house to build that right?

Ain't no way the local shop has the tools i do on my bench..
8/26/2014 9:17:52 PM EDT
[#4]
How long you plan on hanging out at the shop? I can bring my soldering iron, not sure we need much else I got all the wire and solder today. Just depends on if the shop would let us build it there.
8/26/2014 9:28:46 PM EDT
[#5]
The shop closes at 7pm.. i should be there by 5-5:15..

[#6]
I'll swing by as close to 5 as possible. We can sort things out then, if we can't get it together tomorrow I can wait and just mess with the stingray and plume vail you have for me.
8/26/2014 9:45:56 PM EDT
[#7]
Looks like the box itself has to be assembled.. correct?
8/26/2014 9:54:49 PM EDT
[#8]
Yep, it comes with posts and screws. I'm just wondering where everything fits inside. The first pic I texted you a few weeks back really doesn't show it's size.

You're not worried about the LiPo going all mushroom-cloudy?

Ah, okay. I'm a pussy when it comes to those things. Heard too many (probably exaggerated,) horror stories.

ETA - That's going to be a sweet mod

They're not exaggerated... Shit can get ugly real quick.

But once you have done it once, the rest are easy. So long as you pay attention to not cross the wires.

So do we need a vape and RC picture thread now?

I'll post up my Axial Wraith in a bit.

I have to keep my lipos at storage rates if they sit for any length of time.  I typically only discharge to around 3.3V per cell.

I'd wondered if someone would look at lipos for a power source, but figured the potential for over discharging and battery maintenance were too high.

I was thinking about the issues with the lipo as well, but people burn up the normal batteries as well. I wanted to run the 18350 in it, not sure if that is possible. If it is I will try to use that over the lipo.

Lipo batteries are maintenance whores.   They puff and become useless if overdischarged.  A nicad vent is child's play compared to a lipo going up. I fly 500 and 550 class helicopters for shiggles.  I have to watch my lipos when they charge even though I use a nice computerized charger.  I've see more than my fair share of posts on rc heli forums of lipos burning up and taking the house with it.

I had a 1s battery go on a tiny mcpx.  The bird was burnt by the time it hit the ground.  And this is a small 500mah battery.  And nope, the battery wasn't damaged prior to flight.  It just decided to end its life in my backyard...taking a $$ collective pitch heli with it.

Not being a negative nancy here.  I've considered the high discharge rates of lipos as a mod battery and it would be nice.  I'm a laid back dude, but carrying that thing would make me paranoid.

Finally had a chance to sit down with this, not much but it's a start. Still not sure about the battery situation, if I do use the lipo I need to find a decent little charger for it so it can be monitored.

New pics in the beginning of the thread in a few minutes.

Really digging the size of that.  I wish more companies would make small box mods.

Would an 18650 fit in there?
9/4/2014 8:36:34 AM EDT
[#23]
That's a negative. Maybe if arranged correct I could fit the 350.

A bunch of VW devices use LiPo batteries (MVP, Vaporshark, VariANT, various DNA boxes, ect.), what makes them safer than wiring up your own with a DNA 30?

Dude (Smacks head).. Give up the idea of running an 18350.

Even Hana uses the pretty much the same LiPo pack you bought in their mini instead of a 350 cell. (And if an 18350 was the shit.. the creator of Karbon mods would promote it instead of the LiPo pack....)

And to answer your text.. I am free this weekend AFAIK. (Will be at Dean's shop tomorrow night for a bit though.)

Entirely possible i'm being a giant pussy.  Just wanted him to be aware of lipo issues.

If the lipo discharge rates were kept low, I suppose you could limit issues.

Just having seen a tiny one (1s 500mah) let go, I'd be careful what lipo I selected.  They are energetic, they vent for a lengthy amount of time.  I threw mine out into a corn field and it smoldered for another couple minutes.

Whats good about the LiPo battery in question, in regards to your concern is how the discharge rate is calculated.

For example, a 1000mah LiPo an 10c is (1x10) = 10amps. So a 2000mah LiPo at 20c is (2x20) = 40amps.

Given the Battery in question is a 1200 at 25c (1.2x25) he's good for 30amps continious.

Not to mention that, besides allowing for constant power throughout the life of the charge on the battery, the other advantage of a regulated device is the safeties built into it (or so I was told).

Ok lipo it is. I'm not sure what time I'll be home tomorrow, have to go over to the sister in laws for a few minutes. If I get back before 6 I'll swing by the shop. If not I'll give you a call and see where you will be sat/sun I'm pretty much free all sat and Sun till around 5.

I think I'm in for $130. I have to go back and check all the prices. The box was $70, the DNA board was around $50 and the rest was all like under $10 for all the little parts.

Hope to finish this weekend.

It's really small, smaller than I expected. The edges of the box are sharp, I'm gonna have to round them out a little. Besides that it seems like a nice little mod. Just depends on my build skills.

Giant pain in the ass due to size. But I hope to have this done either tonight or tomorrow.
