From where? and anything special I should be looking for?
Are all hones created equal? |
|
No, there are various types of hones that perform in different ways.
Here is a great hone listing. I use I use Nortons, Belgian yellow and blue, Chinese 12k PHIG(People's Hone of Indeterminable Grit), DMT diamond plates, Japanese stones, Shapton glass 30k and balsawood with diamond paste. The balsa is sort of a transition between hones and stropes. I don't have any Naniwa Super Stones but I've heard good things about them. |
| If I were buying a first hone I would get one here. I bought a yellow and blue Belgian stone and matching slurry stones for not too much. The edge you get is more to the comfortable end of the spectrum than super sharp. Great for sensitive skin. The old barbers used them to hone their razors. |

Another good place for Belgian coticule hones:
The Superior Shave I've bought one from them. They are GTG. |

So I have a tiny, tiny nick that I want to get rid of. The rest of the blade is still in perfect shape. Maybe start with a 4K to sharpen, then 8K, then possibly 10-12K to finish? I don't think I need to go finer than that before a nice stropping. What do you think? |

Found a nice set of Nortons on Prime.
Came with a 220/1000, a 4K/8K, and a flattening stone for the stones. Just arrived today, so I am gonna give it a go this weekend when I have some time. Was watching a bunch of YouTube vids, seems like a good angle is just one thickness of electrical tape on the spine. This should be fun. Have been using a shavette and my DE's for a while, looking forward to my good straight razor again |
