So I've been telling all my family that I want to learn how to make sushi for Christmas (you know as a hint to get me some sushi making supplies ). Does anyone have any tips, tricks, or recommend a book that I should purchase and read? My girlfriend's mom makes sushi at home, and it looks awfully complicated if you don't know what you're doing.

I make sushi at home. But it was based on trial and error.

Why don't you ask the gf's mom to show you.  That way you score bonus points with both gf and mom.

I've made sushi before, but not since I lived in Sydney and had access to fresh sushi grade fish.  Best tip is to get good sushi rice.  If you are making rolls you'll need one of the mats to roll it all up.

What type of fish were you wanting to use?

Sushi making classes are all over the place here.  Usually a 1-2 night class and includes some supplies, like a rolling mat.  I don't recall them being very expensive.  I usually see them in the Groupon and Living Social emails.  Some of my coworkers have been and found it helpful.

You can learn it watching it on Youtube - it's not rocket science to make sushi, but it may not be pretty your first few times.

I think the hardest part is getting the rice right.  Pack it too tight, and it gets too chewy and gummy.  Pack it too little, and it falls apart.
