How do y'all dress at the lodge?  Have to wear a suit?  Jeans and a shirt okay?

[#1]
No jeans...   Khaki's and a sport shirt, or anything with a collar.  No tennis shoes.

However the bylaws of the lodge state.

Each lodge is different in NY, but Mass. Has rules for the whole state from GL.

Pennsylvania GL makes the call.

The bare  minimum dress is collared shirts and slacks, I think.

Our district is very old school and holds the standards to, a minimum of a sportcoat and tie.

Most of the brothers come to meetings wearing a sportcoat and tie or standard business attire. I wear a tux with tails to every meeting and a sportcoat to school.

We WILL NOT turn a brother away for dressing down or wearing his work clothes. We would rather see him in lodge than have him miss because he couldnt get changed first.

Yeah, I got it.  None of you can possibly tell what the "dress code" is in a particular lodge where I am....I'll figure it out.

NetWurk,

I looked at your grand lodge website and your past magazine issues and it looks like Officers wear suits and tuxes. I did notice  Brothers in flannel shirts and casual dress in other lodge pictures when they had aprons on.....

A sport coat would be appropriate, I think.

Are you new?

Just ask.

When I'm traveling I'll call the lodge secretary and ask what is appropriate for their lodge.

Depends on the meeting......remember its what is on the inside not the exterior.  I am from a small blue collar lodge.......so it varies for stated meetings.  Degree work is dark sport coat and white shirt.

For what it is worth, the lodge I went through my degrees in required the Officers to wear tuxedoes.  THe Lodge I am an Officer in now has a collar as a minimum, and even that is loosely adhered to.  I am of the mind that the attendance and investment of the attendees is the important thing.  Just my two cents...

I'm not even new.  I'm on the outside looking in.  I'm not a mason, I've never even met a mason, I read Hadup's book (Freemasonry for Dummies).  I'm interested in masonry because I've always been interested in mythology and legend, I'm becoming very concerned at the direction of society, and I'd like to know that there are real live people that still believe in the values and traditions I believe in.  If I can learn more or help others learn more, that'd be an added bonus.

Ok, well if you have any other questions, please ask Directly.  Thats what we are here for.

This is where you want to start. http://www.la-mason.com/  There is a lodge locator there.

You'll find a lot of variation.  Even in the Salt Lake Valley (which has nine lodges?) you'll find variation.  One of my lodges is very formal, suits and black tie all the time.  The other one, where I'm sitting in the East, is much more relaxed.  Began as a mining lodge in Kennecott Copper's mining town of Garfield.  It's held on to most of those roots including a relaxed dress code.  I'd rather a brother join us in lodge in his work clothes than not come at all.

I am very new, and no little of what lies ahead. But I do have some thoughts on this matter. If one holds any amount of respect for the organization, and what goes on within the walls of the lodge I believe he would make an honest attempt to dress in a manner that conveys a message of reverence and respect to all parties present. IN contrast, I also understand that there are those who may be coming directly from work, or who lack the means to buy a suit. I have learned that we are to judge a person by their merit and internal qualifications, and are supposed to look beyond worldly possessions when judging  a mans character.

I make it a point to dress in a dignified manner whenever possible when attending a lodge sponsored function. There may be times when I arrive after work for a study session and am dressed causal(jeans, T-shirt, and possibly a baseball cap) However, I will always make an honest and sincere attempt to present myself at a level that shows respect for the men, organization, and tradition that Free Masonry represents.

If you're not a mason yet, just skip down to the asterics

We meet on the level. Your word has just as much weight as someone with 4 consonants after their name.

I like to think not only do we meet on the level, we are to look on the level as well.

Sure, you might have those with 2K dollar suits versus 2oo dollar suits but on the surface everyone is dressed somewhat the same. There are however exceptions to the rule.

Remember, it is always easier to dress down if you show up in a three piece suit than it is to dress up if you show up in jeans.

Go with the suit if you cannot contact someone for a dress code.

******

fwiw, I would go, "as you are," if you are not a mason and are showing up to meet the men at the temple.

I submitted an application yesterday.  The Junior Warden and some other guy signed my application, they said it has to be read at 2 meetings, so it might take a while to get back to me.  But I got to meet some of the members, talk to 'em a little bit.  Very funny people.  Seriously--very funny.  The mood was anything but somber.  I showed up too late to eat, right before the meeting started.  So, if I'm accepted, does that mean I'll eventually have to cook?  Because I have a smoker and I can smoke a couple Pork Butts no problem

Dress at our lodge runs the gambit from jeans and a tshirt to a suit.  Generally officers will be collar shirt or shirt and tie for stated meetings, suit for degree work.  We are not inclined to turn a brother away because of dress.

Collars are common but so are overalls in my lodge. We turn away no brothers and feed all who arrive on time or even late.
