I was thinking about the numerical odds in a Zombie attack. Unless you have a group of trained shooters, you're screwed trying to defend a location by yourself. So how about a sentry gun?

We already have sensors that will detect faces. Your digital camera probably has a cheap one.

Youtube has a video of a paintball gun that can track a fast moving target and shoot it until it stops.

So if you put the 2 together, you have a gun that detects motion and aims for the head. Add a stable platform, and a belt or drum fed semi auto, and you're GTG.

The zombies wont attack it, since it has no Braiiinnsss.... and it's a force multiplier. Just dont run in front of it...

Yes it may not be as fun as going Rambo, but it could at least cover your back.

Thoughts?

I have been thinking about build one(paintball version) for awhile now. Maybe I should start working on my own prototype. The problem I see is keeping it running. Such a devise would need lots of batteries to keep it running.

you could run it on car or maritime batteries charged by solar or generator

You'd want to have a hell of a belt on that thing.  It would suck for it to run dry right in the middle of the advancing hordes.  Hopefully you will have reduced their numbers quite a bit by then though.

Wow, that was pretty impressive, and a little frightening.  That video got me thinking-screw zombies, it's only a matter of time before we need a forum for the impending machine attack.

I think the point of a sentry gun is to act as a early warning system giving you time to escape.

You could do it that way too.

I think those sentries were using either thermal or radar targeting. Thats why I thought of the facial recognition software, since you can't kill a zombie by shooting center of mass.

Keep the gun semi auto to save ammo. 1-3 shots per zombie. 1 person could keep 2-3 of them fed, and maintain overwatch for the ones that got through. Or to engage them at a distance.

Thats why a good generator should be part os your preps. Preferably containted  or slightly armored in case of an unusually curious zed.

Heh, mount it in the back of a 4x4 for both power and mobility. Heavy brush gaurds and high clearance. The driver is the bait. Couple gunners in the back....

Great idea for small defense but in a situation where you're overrun you would have to have a lot of these guns to control the horde. And if you have Zombies that are attracted to noise then you would be screwed unless equipped with an awsome silencer.

DO WANT!

I suppose you could use a system like this, combined with frozen paintballs if the zombies were dead enough/juicy enough.

I wonder how much damage can be done if you substitute paintballs with steel ball bearing?

I'd think it would be too risky that it would go all Skynet on you and try to kill all humans.

Seriously, why would you let a sentry gun get to do the fun task of shooting zombies? It wouldn't even enjoy it! Bring your kids on the roof, bring a few bricks of .22lr and let them have at 'er! They'll have a blast!

I really appreciate that there is finally someone else out there who also thinks the apocalypse can be family friendly, now to convince my wife that I am not the only one and it’s ok for her to enjoy thinking about zombies and how they will impact our lives for the positive.   I can be really late for work, all the time! The kids will get valuable life skills, like not being whiners, and the dog will finally be worth something, steak!  All things considered, not half bad!

That thing, mounted on top of this would be pure win.

Ball bearings are to heavy for a paint ball gun."Willy Wonka's Everlasting Gobstoppers"
on the other hand, mixed in with regular paint balls, always kept things interesting when I paint balled
