...For a Cure! http://www.news8austin.com/content/top_stories/274039/zombies-invade-south-austin-for-a-cure Zombies invade South Austin for a cureFour humans lean over a table, paying close attention as they listen for a quiet snarl. Before they know it, that snarl has turned into a startling growl as a zombie charges toward them, knocking over soda cans and piles of paper as he searches for food. The only way to stop the creatures from hunting their prey is hearing Jarrett Crippen say, "very nice job." Crippen is the director of Scare for a Cure. Looks like their concept is sort of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome meets parts of Resident Evil or maybe Half-Life. It actually works better than the last couple of RE movies.
The site is an old home construction site. Now, that doesn't sound like much, but it has about a 45,000 sf footprint with 24" concrete foundations and 16" walls... in some places 3 stories high with a tower, various pits, a basement, lots of stairways, and the whole thing is decorated like a techno-industrial postapocalyptic trading town that was a pre-collapse high security scientific research facility. If it was underground you'd have the Winchester Mystery House crossed with Black Mesa facility several years after people reoccupied, vandalized and modified it for current purposes... with a still strong zombie infestation in the blocked off areas and surrounding hills. A "safe" zone in a world where nothing is really safe. Script mentions various weaponry including shotguns, machetes, chainsaws - the usual sort of Halloween thing.
Cast appears to be a mix of age groups and backgrounds. The people running it seem well versed in Z training films, the director was asking try-outs if they ever saw various movies or read Word War Z - trying to get the type performance he envisions... and I heard one of the audition board give a Deliverance quote. I was asked at audition if I wanted a good guy or bad guy role. Personally I feel that being the bad guy (especially a very bad guy who enjoys his job) is the better role. |
