Anyway to help curb the need to dig. Our backyard might have some moles but thats about it. Our westhighland terrier is just digging the crap out of it tho. He is a fox hunter so great for throwing into holes, but never thought he would be the one to dig them too.

any ideas?

Catch him in the act (shouldn't be hard). Grab him by the scruff of the neck, shake it, say "NO!" Take him inside for a while (outdoor priv's revoked). Should take about a week. Must catch him EVERY time. Don't let him outside unless you are prepared to monitor.

What do you do if your male dog often enjoys a after dinner poo cigar.

Our shepherd mix goes thru phases of just destroying the yard. I would love to somehow bury an airhorn in the ground where she is digging. Let her just get down to it and touch that thing off.  I bet she would shit herself...and not dig anymore. Not realistic but thats my happy thought when she is in one of her digging phases.

Terriers dig. It is their nature.

Resolving the digging problem:

1. If there are rodents, you can eliminate them first

2. Fill holes the dog goes back to with his feces. It will stop the digging in those areas, but won't solve all digging

3. More exercise. Digging is done for entertainment purposes. The dog is bored, find something else for it to do.

4. Supervise the dog's outdoor activities and when you see it digging, correct the problem and redirect the dog to the right behavior.

5. Use the dog's landscaping skills to your own advantage–– plant something in the holes.

This worked for me with a Springer that I had (and for my Weim on other issues).

get an empty soda or beer can and put about 20 pennys in it and tape the opening closed with duct tape. When you catch them in the act of digging (or anything for that matter) chuck the can NEAR them (dont hit em). The sound of the can is very obnoxious and really gets there attention soon you will just have to shake the can and eventually all you will have to say is "do you want me to get the can?" and they will straighten up.

Worked for both of my dogs were were very hard headed right out of the whelping box, LOL

Honestly, I found that the poo in the hole trick didn't work. I had to resort to the water hose.

Most dogs dig because they are bored. Take your dog for a walk, teach him something new, play with him.

fill the hole with water when he digs. then but his head under water. thats how we did it when we were kids to our dog and she stopped the digging after a few times.
