My Chihuahua's anal gland appears to be swelling up slightly and I have an appointment with  the vet setup for an hour from now. How serious is this? Anything I should watch out for?

They need to be drained. You can do it yourself, but any thing to do with the ass I prefer a professional to handle it.

If they aren't emptied abscess' can form and rupture out through the skin.

There appears to be minor leakage, or almost like something is draining. Is this a sign  of something very serious? I didn't even have an idea anything might be wrong until yesterday.

Boy oh boy are you in for a stink day if you do this yourself.

Probably just natural emptying.

I'd be afraid of crushing him if I tried to squeeze him too hard. I'm leaving for the vet in 15 minutes so they can do the dirty work.

Scare the living shit out of your pet... when I did it in the past they shot out this rank smelling black liquid... flippin disgusting.

We had out dog's anal glands drained a few weeks ago. Not sure how they get filled up to begin with but I guess it's somewhat normal.
ETA: DIY anal gland draining? What are you thinking?

Oh yeah.

When I was a teen, my parent's shi-tzu took care of his gland himself, by dragging his butt on the carpet. And left a 10 foot long stripe behind him. My dad was screaming obscenities at the dog, I was LMAO, then the stench hit us both and we had to clear the room.

Most dog groomers will "express the gland", and it might be cheaper than a vet visit.

QFT.  My oldest son lost it when we did this on our Foxhound, one whiff and he was heaving his guts out.  Never again, I'll pay the vet...

Update: Well I went to the vet and my dog is undergoing emergency surgery as we speak. $300 I didn't expect, unemployed out of college blows.

Well I got him home from the vet and we just took a 3hr nap. He seems to be doing much better compared to when I picked him up and he was acting like a zombie. $285 out the door to make a 1/8" incision on his butt.

Imagina leaving a can of sardines in the sun all day then opening it and pouring the juices on your top lip - that's what it smells like.

Had to drain the glands on my wifes mutt once cos I wasn't gonna pay $200 for the vet to do it. I almost puked doing it - just make sure you wear long gloves and do it OUTSIDE!

They couldn't express them, it was too serious they said. So they had to do the surgery.

if you get the glands removed, does that mean that they wont ever emit that foul smelling stuff anymore?  I have a dog that "releases" if she gets scared and it is foul.. I'm wondering if surgery would be worth it..

Normally, when a dog takes a turd, the turd passing through the rectum squeezes out what is in the gland.  The stuff comes out with the turd.

For whatever reason, when it does NOT get squished out with a turd,it fills up, and as others have mentioned, can get infected.  When it's filled up, it is NASTY.  You do NOT want to smell it.

The first thing to do is to get your dog on a good food, if it isn't already.  Cheap food, giving soft turds, is the prime reason why the stuff doesn't get squished out when they take a dump.  Get at least something as good as Iams or Eukanuba, preferably something like Canidae or better.  See if that fixes the problem.

if it doesn't, then you just need to have the dog's glands expressed regularly.  You can do it yourself, or have your vet do it.  Some vets will even do it for free, and many groomers will do it as standard procedure as part of the grooming.

PS:  One of my friends, a vet tech, made the mistake of standing behind a dog while someone else was expressing the glands.  It squirted her in the FACE.

I believe that would be the case. I was quoted $800 for the surgery for that .

He's fed Royal Canine. I'm just going to have to start having his butt squeezed regularly.

In addition to a good quality dog food, give him a little plain yogurt a few times a week.  My dog thinks it's a treat mixed with his food.

Tell me more about this. My dog gets her anals drained by the groomer (I love my dog...but not THAT much) when I notice her licking a tad too aggressively and I'm just curious what the yogurt does...if I can keep her "balanced" and keep her from licking (and the occasional "scared spray" already discussed here with yogurt...I'll give it a shot.

The cultures/enzymes in yogurt help keep their digestive system working properly.  You just have to be careful not to over do it or it will give them diarrhea.  I give my dog about two tablespoons three times a week and he's 135#.  He loves it.

No actually I wasn't trying to be a dick.

I was just saying I have no interest in doing that as my gag reflex is pretty strong.

Do your anal glands need expressed Mr. Sensitiivity?
