My wife and I aren't new to dogs, but this situation is a first for both of us. Picked up a 10 week old Goldendoodle from a breeder about two hours away. The pups seemed sluggish when we got therre but within minutes of our arrival they were running around and my son was having fun trying to herd them. We put the pup in the car, he cried for about 10 minutes, and didn't hear a peep for the rest of the ride. He ended up having a little vomit and diarrhea on the way home. We get home and all he's been doing for the past several hours is sleeping. Doesn't walk around, no interest in food or water, lays down whether you put him outside or anywhere on the floor. I know puppies sleep a lot, but this doesn't seem healthy to me. I'm concerned about his hydration status, blood sugar, etc. Has anyone had this experience before?

Update: After several hours of not eating or drinking last night, my wife had the idea to feed him from her hand. He ate roughly a 1/4 cup and then drank a bit as well. He ate about 3/4 cup of food today over the course of three feedings and drank water as well. Interestingly enough, he refuses to eat from the stainless steel bowl we have. It's either hand or paper plate right now. He urinated a total of four times today and had one formed,  normal looking stool. In terms of energy level, he seems extraordinarily fatigued indoors but when you take him out to void he has a blast and a great sense of humor- running, playing, rolling over, etc. My gut says there might be something wrong, but logic is now telling me it's just the initial shock phase of new home life. My wife will be taking him to the vet tomorrow for his initial evaluation. I'll make sure she relays everything to them.

OK here's what you need to do call your vet. It sounds like the dog can have one of two things either the immune system is dropping due to the stress of switching homes. Or if the dog can have an underlying case of issues with either parasites or worms. Either case  Definitely requires a vet if you'd like to you can call a local emergency vet I'm not sure how far you are but there's a great one that's on the border of New York and New Jersey if you need anything else feel free to reach back out and I will give you a personal email address to contact me directly or number to call me at.  Either situation isn't good especially that the puppy is lethargic that can really be a sign of something going on internally and a puppy can drop rapidly from that point let me know if you need anything else. Best of luck! FYI I own A rescue in New Jersey which is why I am replying to your question I hope it helps.

Diarrhea and lethargy can point to parvovirus as well, get that pup to the vet asap. If it's parvo they go downhill fast and the symptoms have to be treated very quickly.

A neighbor had a dog that would not eat or drink out of a stainless steel bowls.  It would eat out of plastic or paper bowls, plates.  They think that the dog could see it's reflection in the stainless steel and would not eat or drink because of that.   My neighbor finally took a sander to the bottoms of the SS bowls then the dog would eat and drink out of them.

An initial vet check should be done within 72 hours of taking home any puppy, whether it seems healthy or not. Yours in not sounding healthy, so sooner is better. Sounds like you went to a pretty sketchy breeder.

Update: Took two or three days but the pup is now normal- eating and drinking, voiding frequently, running around chasing our kids, etc. Between my wife and I, we've raised five dogs and none acted as abnormal as he did. I guess it was just a major case of separation anxiety. Vet check was completely normal on Monday
