Hey all

I'm kind of new to this guitar thing.  I've been relearning how to play for the past year after being away from it for 30 years and don't know jack about strings.  I have a middle of the road Alvarez acoustic and need to replace the strings.  I don't need the best thing available but I would like something that is going to sound decent.

What say you all?

Oh boy.  Really, this is so damned subjective, everyone has their opinion.  It is what YOU thinkj sounds good on YOUR particular guitar.  And a middle of the road Alvarez is no slouch guitar, Alvarez is great.  Point is, each guitar, particularly acousitcs, is different.  Ya gotta experiment.  Now, of course, don'r get crap.  Crap is crap.  I am right now playing with some Thomastik-Infeld strings on my D16, and personally feel that these strings are what God itself may be using.  But my opinion may change tomorrow.  I have used many, many different strings.  Sometimes it even depends on mood.  I used to change strings weekly.  With the T-I's, given their expense, not so much.

What's a good string?  Dunno.  Ya gotta find that yourself, mah man!  Do you want warm?  Bassy?  Tinny?  Waddayawant?  Just get a good grade string, mediums of course, and play on.

That's what I was afraid...I'm going to have to go to Guitar Center and rely on their "expertise" and advice.

Being new to the guitar, brand does not really matter much, you'll find what you like after a while. If you wanna go cheap, just get a set of Martins or D'Addarios in light or extra light (easier to finger for beginners) or if you want a set of strings that will last much longer (and cost a bit more) try a set of Elixir Nanowebs, they are coated and last for many months for me whereas the cheaper strings only last me a month if that.

Thanks for the input.  I have purchased a set of Elixir polyweb coated (medium).  I'll install them tonight and see how things go.

I just put these on my guitar a couple weeks ago and I've been very impressed.  They sound good and have lost very little of their brightness since I put them on and I have played this guitar a lot since I put them on.

Not every guitar sounds best with mediums.  And IMHO, not every player needs to put up with them, either.

I'm just sayin'.  I like D'addario EXP lights, I like extra lights, and I put up with mediums on one guitar.  I like Martin Marquis strings a lot, too.

Next time try some of the Elixir nanowebs, I prefer them to the polyweb.

Thomastiks for me, personally. I drive a ways to get them, too.

Then John Pearse.
