One of my students asked me to teach him to play slide. The way it was explained to me was "..pick three notes that sound good and play 'em." I've never really used a slide before other than being annoying at soundchecks. I told him to check out some open tunings and listen to some music (hes all about System of a DownheRocky Mountain Way Bad to the Bone More Human Than Human (because of his resistance to listen to anything that isn't metal) Everything Zen I'm sure I'm missing a great deal here, but is that a decent start? What do y'all suggest I should check out music and technique-wise? Looks like there is a trip to the music store in the next 24 hours Thanks. |

The Black Crowes - Twice As Hard The Allman Brothers - Good Clean Fun & Seven Turns Ozzy Osbourne - No More Tears Blackfoot - Train, Train George Thorogood - Move It On Over, Who Do You Love, Ect (most of his playing is done with a slide) Pantera - Floods (I'm not too shure on this one. I remember Dime telling Guitar World magazine in an interview about doing some slide work on The Great Southern Trendkill & I'm fairly certian that's the song) |

Its funny and sad all at once. I know all those names, heard all those players at least a dozen times....and they slipped my mind at the moment of truth. Then I think back to what I was listening to in my 'formative' years and boy am I kicking myself in the ass for it now. Fuckin' Megadeth everythinghankslearned loooong ago. |

I think that's a pretty broad problem with young musician's today. I think its fine if you have studied the past masters and then evolve into some kind of shredding headbanger. Unfortunately, a lot of the younger players are weaned on a very monochromatic soundscape of metal. As a result, they have no depth to their playing. Only a view of those ever look into the past and the real roots of rock music. YMMV |

I grew up in a very eclectic household, so I heard everything there was to hear. Its just that when I hit 9th grade, I just got so deep into metal that I almost forgot about the thousands of artists prior. ALMOST. I'm so glad I grew out of the metal phase quickly...it just wasn't quick enough. I actually have a bit of disdain for metal now. Backsliding rules. Going about it the wrong way? Ever since I hurt my arm...I've lost all practice discipline. |
