First off, I do not want to pony up for a full bore Core Custom 24. This will be a gigging guitar.
Option 1: local guy on Craigslist wants $900 for a used early 90's CE24. It's transparent Amber finished, and well played. It's been refretted by the best luthier in Montana, the finish on the back of the neck is worn, and it has some serious mojo going. The pickups are Vintage Bass in the neck, and some Seymour Duncan PAF style bucket in the bridge. He also has the original Dragon 1 bridge pickup. Option 2: I played an S2 Custom 24 a couple days ago at my local shop. I was very impressed. It has the Vintage Bass in the neck and an HFS pickup at the bridge. Retail is $1,399, but they'll let it go for $1,250. It has a set neck. It's the same color as the first option. No top carve like a Core model or CE model, but still very comfortable. Playability wise, both felt great. The CE24 had a slightly wider nut with a thinner (depth) neck. The S2 had a neck that felt equally great, but closer in specs to my 64 American Reissue Telecaster. I preferred the HFS pickup to the Dragon, but not sure if the extra coin is worth it. Which should I get? Our band plays mostly alt-country that leans more towards straight ahead rock. |
| Option 1 for me.. Especially if they guy will wiggle a little on the price. I love guitars that have been around the block once or twice and survived. Also a neck that has had the finish worn off by playing is a big plus for me. Sure you can sand the finish off, but I don't think they feel the same personally. |
