Just saw on Twitter that the plane is intact, belly down on the dirt.

Glad the pilot is OK.

Hopefully the same goes for the Blue Angels pilot.

News confirmed one killed in Blues crash. Don't know if pilot or someone on ground.

Pilot did not eject.

Wow, what are the chances for both teams to have a crash in one day....weird.

No kidding!

I came to this subforum to check on the update on the Blue Angles crash, and saw this thread and thought maybe the breaking news had the wrong demo team.

From the pictures it almost looks like he road it in and landed it on its belly and then bailed.   Hard to believe it would be stable enough after ejection to belly land on its own, although stranger things have happened (thinking about that Delta Dart or something that belly landed itself in the 60's).

Crappy day in the aviation world. Been a bit of a rough go for the past few weeks, actually, what with the loss of the EC225 crew a few weeks back, the AT-6 crash out here at KFFZ, and the P-47 in the Hudson last week. Stay sharp out there, folks!

Is the lack of hours these guys have been getting contributing to these incidents?

Is punching out after bellying such a bad idea with the risk of a post-impact fire? Can the ejection rocket set things off?

Looks like he guided it to a safe place to chuck it and got out.  I wouldn't want to ride it in or hope to eject safely as its bouncing or breaking apart along the ground.  But I did stay at a HOliday inn last night.  Actually it was a Courtyard Marriott.

The burn of the rocket catapult is pretty big it might set off some fumes but the seat would go up high enough and off to the side to get the aircrew away from the aircraft.

My guess is it happened really fast and it was a gutsy move to point the jet away from people.

Every year in Smyrna it's airshow season in June. The past 2 days have been full of joyful noises from the Blue Angels practicing, easily viewed from my window and the roof of the building. Right up until a co worker calmly said, hey 1 of those planes just crashed.  I didn't see the plane go down, but the crash site was on my way home. Blackhawks and the rest of the Blues were searching for a chute that didn't deploy. Sad day in Smyrna TN.
