Just got current in a C172 and have a few questions that I'm curious abt (thought I would ask here before I hit up my instructor with more questions).

I have a commercial instrument single/multi.  I do need an IPC and understand I can't fly/file/log instrument time until I get my IPC and am working on that ASAP. But before I get that what if:

I have a friend that has offered me some right seat time in a Light twin for instate/ local flying. He is not IFR rated but wanted someone else along for local flying and a few CC's. Can I log the multi time that I am "hands on" VFR even though I have NOT flown a multi in years?  Do I need 3 solo t/o and landings before I can log the time or was/is that just single operations?  Do I need anything to be able to log the multi time?

Thanks everyone!!

I don't believe that the 3 T/Os and landings are required to be solo. It cannot be passenger carrying. I personally would get the 3 landings with both of you, and then be on your way. Ensure you are the sole manipulator of the controls during the three cycles, and the flight continues as a IFR training flight, both pilots are needed and thus are required crewmembers.

I think that's in general keeping of the requirements of the regulations.

No solo requirement for multi currency, 3 bounces and you're good. Get some IFR practice with your buddy letting him act as a safety pilot in VMC then take your IPC.

The way is was explained to me is there is a difference between "logging" and "acting" as pilot in command.  For example, FAR 61.31(e) says you cannot "act" as pilot of command of a complex aircraft without a complex endorsement, but FAR 61.51(e) says you can "log" PIC time if you are the sole manipulator of the controls for an aircraft and you are rated for the category and class.  There is no mention of currency requirements for logging PIC time.  So based on what I was told, you could log PIC time getting a complex endorsement in an Arrow if you have your private certificate and the instructor is the "acting" PIC.

Same with a safety pilot.  The guy under the hood can log PIC time, but the safety pilot can "act" as PIC and log PIC time too.  The agreement of who is acting as PIC has to be made before the flight.  If the guy under the hood is acting as PIC, then the safety pilot can log SIC time because he is a required flight crew member even though an Arrow doesn't require two pilots.

Based on that, if you are not current in a multi, I would assume you could log PIC time, but not act as PIC until you are current.
