I'm a bit ashamed as an aircraft enthusiast to come up short in identifying this bird.  Google image search, and 20 years of aircraft books also led me nowhere.

It looks Russian from the canopy, with a pair of RD-10 turbojets.  The MIG-9, Yak-23 are similar but not close, and all seem to borrow from the German Ta-183 and P.1101 designs

Any ideas?

Looks like they designed it while still in "Engines have always been in front,  Where else are you gonna put one... in back??" mode of thinking.

I saw the remains of one of those crashed at the base of an oak tree in a suburban neighborhood near KOSH. The pilot/owner decided to press on to destination skipping his fuel stop. Figured he could make it. Figured wrong. Flamed out on final. Tried to put it down on a street but ended up hitting the tree. Neighbors came out to the plane just as the flames started. They drug the pilot out just in time for him to watch his wife cook in the back seat.

And then there's this:

They may have also done it for weight distribution while they were still learning modern design techniques.

AHHH!!!! Thank you for posting this!

I managed to sneak a peak of something I didn't recognize in a local hangar recently and i haven't been able to figure it out. Looks like I have a winner now.

Found and read the report on that. It was another narrative on people with bigger checkbooks than experience and skill leading to tragic outcomes.

Witnesses heard the girl screaming but couldn't help because of the flames.

I have some good pics somewhere showing the crash scene after the plane was removed. It told the story very well of exactly where the planes path had been. The clipped power line, the gouged out lawn from his left wing, the scratches in the road, and lastly, the bent stop sign, scortched tree, and burnt black concrete. Not a lot of fire due to the conspicuous lack of fuel. He was just trying to get it on the road. I remember Poberezny calling the dumbass a hero for making every valiant effort to not crash into houses. Yeah, except getting more fuel and demonstrating some basic ADM.
