I am finally scheduled for my checkride on Monday and weather looks like it will hold. Examiner is an old school old dude. Apparently he gets annoyed with folks that cannot navigate without GPS and lack airmanship. Trying to review everything one more time and watching the King checkride video again. Not too concerned about the flying part, a little worried about the Pandora's box the oral can be. Any final words of wisdom? |

Use the minimal amount of words to answer a question while not sounding like an ass.
In other words, before answering, take a second to think about what the examiner wants to actually hear before diving in with unnecesary fluff. Hesitation while formulating a good response is worth way more than an instant BS one. The examiner llikely does not want to make things difficult but often the applicant opens the can of worms. |

When I took mine 20 some years ago. I talked through each step of every maneuver. Basically described what I was doing as I was doing it and why. I think it helped. The only maneuver I messed up was the soft field. I hit a little too hard and the guy just said lets try that again and I had no problem. The oral at least for mine was a piece of cake he did focus on the questions I missed (I think only 2) on the written but I was told he would.
Good luck!!!! |

Loooong day. Left my house at 630am, finally home at 500pm. But I passed. Congrats, man! Damn little in life compares to passing that first check-ride! Now, go out, have fun, take friends for rides and along the way scare the living shit outta yourself a time or two (trust me... it'll happen The last thing I'll say is go out and get every endorsement- high power, complex, tailwheel- so you can be PIC in those airplanes that require it (by the way, you CAN log the time you're at the controls AS PIC, you just can't BE the pilot -in-command until you have the endorsement). |

I spent over 4.5 hrs in a plane today, I think it is time to spend some time on the ground for a while. First add-ons after this will be sailplane and tailwheel, probably in that order. |

I can't give a ton of advice as I just passed my checkride two weeks ago. Just do what you've been trained. http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b29/1BMF/ResizedImage_1380370212976_zps42d0d9dc.jpg The Navy didn't want me after 3 OCS applications. If you want it bad enough you will find a way. I have since gotten into a flying club to rent a Cessna 150 for $45 an hour, just got checked out in that in Wednesday. Going to build time and get my instrument and possibly my sport CFI. That should give me a good resume for an Air Guard slot. Just need to ace the AFOQT. They don't care about your civilian ratings. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but in the guard side those slots are going to guys already in the unit and not someone coming in from the street. |
