One thing that strikes me as odd.... why did the tail wheel just suddenly decide to come out and play?

It pops out when the airplane is overstressed. Something like +8 or 9 g's.

I feel sick reading the NTSB report and seeing the photos knowing the outcome...

Ah... not so surprised with the outcome knowing that.

Gut wrenching.  I was just at the Stead airport a couple weeks ago.

Makes me sad.

I can't open PDF files on my PS3, which is all I have for internet at home.

What happened where?

Just find a real computer and look at the PDF.

Not possible until Monday.

Can I get some Cliff's Notes to tide me over until then?

No, there are no Cliff's Notes. All this presents is an account of the upset and a factual finding of events, not a "why". You already know the narrative: the plane upset, the pilot tried to recover, the plane and pilot were subjected to high Gs, the plane fell apart and dove into the ground. Lots of pictures of the plane.

Okay. That makes sense.

I did look at Wiki and wondered if this crash may cause rule changes regarding the chopping of wings.

The report has some better detail than the above Cliff's.

Flutter led to the destruction of the trim tabs, which led to the 17G uncommanded pull up. That incapacitated the pilot.

It's the shortened wings that allowed them to stay on the airplane.

I saw the photos of the oilcanning just forward of the empanage but there's no mention of the same condition on the left wing upper surface clearly seen in some of the pictures.  Was that just a result of the overtress during the 17.3 g event?
