I was originally a cigar smoker (Padron 1926 Serie Naturals and Java Manduros are my favorites) who got into pipes. But, I still enjoy an occasional cigar. I am heading to Panama later this summer to hang out with a friend who lives in Bocas del Toros. While there, I want burn down few cigars, since I am not bring a pipe (and the GF is not there to nag me about smoking). I figure I would indulge in a few Cubans while there, mostly just to give them a try. But, I know jack about Cuban cigars, and the guy "in the know" at my local cigar shop is on vacation.
Does the hive have any recommendations or cigars to avoid? I love mostly natural wrap, but the Java Maduro's appeal to me. I will spend the first day in Panama City before heading to Bocas, so I will be able to load up for heading out to Bocas. Thanks! |

Partagas Serie D #4 H. Upmann #2 Cohiba Siglo IV H. Upmann Sir Winston (if you like a Churchill size) Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure Especial Por Larranaga Petite Corona H. Upmann Magnum 46 ETA: To ensure you are not ripped off, I recommend the inexperienced buy only from the La Casa del Habano, the official sales arm of Habanos S. A. You will pay higher prices, but you will get the real thing. |

I cannot believe it, so many posts, and no mention of the following Habano classics:
Monticristo Edmundo Monticristo #2 Monticristo A Boliva Royal Corona HdM Double Corona RyJ Churchill (to original Churchill, specified by Winston Churchill himself) Cohiba Robusto and Edmundo (be aware, lots of fake Cohiba) |

djsmiles would probably know better than me, but in the half dozen or so Montes I've smoke, I've had pretty good luck, and they're some tasty 'gars. If nothing else, get a No. 2 just so you can say you've had one By all means, try a no. 2 or no. 4. But I would try an older one. newer ones are lacking, IMHO. Better spending money and time on others. |

Thanks! well you already have taste if you smoke Padron....literally one of my fav cigar brands check out Cigar Aficionado recommendations for cubans....personally, im never super excited about cubans. Definitely worth getting a few while abroad but i wouldnt go crazy for em. Ask around for a reputable cigar shop and chat up the proprietor. If they are quality, they will be more than happy to discuss your preferences and make some recommendations. |

I'm trying to try everything! I'm by no means an expert but I'd like to think I have pretty good footing. I haven't had a cigar that I didn't like. There are good ones and great ones. If you like Padrons, you should also enjoy a wide variety of Habanos. You might want to buy samplers to get your feet wet or you can dive right in. I would recommend staying away from anything Belenda, Troya and Guantanamera. They're the 3 all machine made short filler brands and actually aren't that easy to find. |
