Need some help from the pros-
I have a 100 count desktop humidor. RH is at 70% and is consistent. Temp is running between 65 and 70. When I cut my cigars they seem like they're too dry. They are very firm and hard. The cap also unravels (the cigars are being cut properly). This may be due to a cheap cutter??? They smoke just fine though, and burn very good. Anything you guys/Gals can think of for me to check? cutting too far down maybe?
Assuming you're talking regular cap (not pointed) try one of the closed side cutters, or lay the cutter on the table, stand your cigar up (in the cutter) and cut. I prefer a punch, but I do smoke a lot of beli and torpedos. I have a specialized cutter for them. At your rh/temp you shouldn't be too dry at all. Maybe the cutter is dull or worn out? Take a piece of fine wet/dry sandpaper or fine emery clothe and sharpen your cutter. Just a few light passes on the bevel (top of bevel to edge)and one light stroke on the bottom edge is all it takes. You can sharpen your pocket punch the same way.
I carry a sharp pocket knife to V cut with. |

I like a lower RH myself, but if they are smoking fine, I wouldn't mess with it. I also just get a bad cap sometimes. Try cutting a little further back, and make sure you use a quality double guillotine. I always lick the cap when I use a punch. |
