I'm relatively new to the passion, but it seems like it doesn't take long to acquire a bunch of pipes, and develop concerns about storage.

What kind of racks/stands do you guys use?

I'm looking for something that might be wall-mounted, and hold 6-ish pipes. I've looked at many online stores (pipes&cigars, smokingpipes, 4noggins, mars, cupojoes, iwanries, etc), but haven't found what I like. I've also searched eBay. I'm thinking either wood or brass.

Any ideas or sources?

Thanks

I found a lot on ebay with a round 4 pipe stand and a round 7 pipe stand that has the days of the week for each spot...They aren't the prettiest but no damage, just plain wood stands; also came with a bunch of estate pipes.  I have pretty much gotten all the ghosts out of them.  After deciding what ones were worth keeping.  But still have not gotten into the buffing wheel thing to try to refinish stuff.

I have yet to look for a good one that I will enjoy, but I would find a cheap one and wait to find one you REALLY want.

I'm actually thinking I need a tobacco/pipe pouch next.

ETA...did read the wall part the first time.  I do have to say I like the wall ones that hold the pipe at a profile view.  Rather than looking at a wall of black holes.

Yes. But I lack skill, patience and style.

I got mine at my local cigar shop.  Cost a whole $15 and holds 6 with style.

Drop me an IM if you want me to get you one OP, I'll trade you for tobacco/cigars.

I understand if you ever want to go in that direction let me know.  I'll be more than glad to give you some pointers.  Lots of things I learned while making mine.  Just havn't seen many wall mounted ones.

Is it a wall hanging one?

Any pics?

Oops, didn't see you wanted one.  All of the ones the shop has are simple stands that either hold pipes around a pipe tobacco container, in clusters or straight rows.

Those are really nice, Ken, well done.

I just have a couple of old Decatur Industries racks and cabinets (sometimes you'll see them sold at B&Ms).  There was a guy named chuck who used to make pretty good quality, relatively inexpensive racks and cabinets, but his website, chucksracks.com isn't around anymore.  You could check out SmokersForum to see what's available on there.

Good luck!

We'll need a parts list, you know, just in case.

Thanks, guys!

It was a pretty straightforward thing.   First I built a simple box out of pine boards and a plywood back.   Then I cut another sheet of plywood to fit inside it.   With the sheet lying inside the box, I drilled holes through both pieces of plywood for the eye screws.

Removed the inner sheet, covered it with fabric, poked holes in the fabric over the drilled holes.  Set this back into the box, screwed the eye screws through the fabric and both sheets of plywood.  The eye screws were dipped in Plasti-dip to rubberize them –– they grip the pipe stems better this way.

Built a hinged frame for the lid and inlaid a sheet of glass.   Lid is retained with a magnetic catch inside the box.   Painted the whole thing with brown walnut-colored enamel... there is no stain made that can make soft white pine look sumptuous.

The eye screws can be rotated to position your pipes exactly where you want them.   I made a second one of these cabinets for a friend, and this time I included a 4" tall shelf at the bottom of the cabinet, with a hinged door that swings down.

The smaller cabinet for the tobacco was purchased at an antique mall with most of that tobacco already in it.   I really wanted the tobacco, and I was considering throwing the cabinet away... it's not quite the right size for my tobacco, but it's not quite useless enough to get rid of.

Well, influenced by ken_mays setup, I think I've solved my pipe storage needs.

I won this on eBay today for $28.85 (Plus $17.94 shipping). Bigger than planned, but I'll have room to grow.

I plan on using the top half for pipes, and the bottom half for tobacco. The low shelf for tools.

Not bad and about what materials might cost.
