I have one of those 1000 watt 2 stroke generators I bought after hurricane gustav but never had to use. It is an Easter Tools TG1200 and I fired it up for the first time today, only one problem, it runs for a few minutes, starts to hunt for an idle then shuts down. The think is basically brand new even though I have had it a while. It is not my main generator, Its main use will be to charge batteries since it has alligator clips just for this purpose.
Thanks, Nick |

how old is the fuel? does it have a throttle or is it wide open? do you have any power tools running off of it? try plugging in something and see if it does it. A month or two, I cycle it out on a fairly regular basis. I guess it has a throttle, it does not go straight to wide open, but the manual says to run it at "open" Have not tried power tools, just a fan I have out in the garage. It does it with a fan, I have not tried running anything else on it. It does have a pilot screw on top of the carb, I am assuming it controls the air. The manufacture says not to adjust it but I have a feeling it may solve my problem. I have not found any how to's for adjusting a pilot screw on a small engine like this, all of the how to's focus on bikes, boats, etc. |

if i remember right some generators will have a skip in the idle when there is no load on the motor. that is why i was curious if you have stuff drawing power off of it. the carb might have 3 screws. an idle, Low and High setting. can you see any other screws on the carb? you can start the engine and adjust the screw. just remember how many turns you turn it each way just in case it gets worse.. |

Does it have an idle switch? I wouldn't imagine that those small gens would have one. Is it a 12v DC alternator and inverter setup? If so then your RPMs are not that important like it would be on an AC generator head unit, they need to run at 3600 RPM (larger gens run at 1800 rpms). Reguardless of what I was just babbling about, 99% likely it's a fuel delivery problem. Clogged gas filter, sediment in the petcock bowl, clogged air filter (is the plastic wrapper still on it?) dump that gas and add fresh. If that don't work then you may have a bad magneto |
