I have an older house (1950) that has a gas outlet "fireplace" with mantel - the floor space is tiled and the tile is a rose color........after living here for 17 years - time to change that ––- so, instead of tearing up the tile - can we paint it or recoat it in some way that actually looks good ––- we will  probably then get some  pricier gas logs.....gas outlet currently capped...

don't say Dura Coat, that's for rifles...

I think it could be done but the outcome might leave much to be desired.  If there isn't a lot of tile involved rip it up and replace it.  Also save one tile and take it to a laser engraver.  They can put photos, words etc. on it for you.

You could TRY to acid-etch it with some muriatic acid and a decent primer, but otherwise I would say no.

Paint will wear off and look terrible.  Tear it out.

Do it right and tear it out.

Or just Krylon it.

Rip it out and re-tile. It's the right way to do it.

Painting floor tile will not last long.  I rank it right up there with wallpaper over wallpaper over wallpaper.  Just tare the tile out and start over.

Composition tile?  Be careful with removing it, I can understand your hesitation.  Asbestos.  But that isn't a big issue either, odorless mineral spirits over a single layer of newspaper, covered by a sheet of plastic (watch for flames and other ignition sources) will loosen the asphalt mastic they used to secure them AND keeps respirable fibers to an absolute minimum.  Tiles should peel up in one day, hence the need for plastic.

Use more thinner to remove all the mastic, a wide knife (drywall) will help scrape the  floor clean, then scrub with rags dampened with thinner.

No paint, not even epoxy, will last on the tile more than a few days of traffic.  And the setting time?  Forget it.

If tile are sound, I would just offset patten new tiles on top.
