We had significant loss of shingles after the remnants of Ike blew through So. Indiana.  A friend of a friend estimated the roof and the insurance co. cut me a check.  Up untill now, I had planned on him doing the roof.  Tonight I found out that I am likely looking at being laid off from T-giving through 1/12/09.  That is quite a bit of time and with it I thought I might do my own roof.  I have helped with roofing in the past and have a tractor w/loader to get the material up there.  With the savings I'll likely buy an air nailer.  My wife has a cousin that formerly worked for a roofing co. and now does handyman work so I would have some ready assistance for the more technical things.
The roof is 36 squares and is a hip with ells on both ends of the house.  The way I am looking at it, the roof is broken into 8 panels that could be done individually.  We want to use dimensional shingles for the project as well.  It will involve a tearoff and screwing down some of the sheeting.  What am I getting into here and what do I need to consider before starting?

Looks like you have most of it.  There's a pro roofer on this forum, hopefully he comments.
roofing isn't rocket science, but it is hard work.

Tearoff is key (IMO) and a heck of a lot of work.

Ice Dam on the bottom 3 to 6' before the edge rocks.  (don't know how much freeze thaw you get), it's spendy, it's a pain to apply but it's worth it.
Drip edge helps a lot.  Replace any bad plywood decking, you only get a look at it every 20 years.

Air nailers rule.

Get friends, supply beer and BBQ, go to town.

Yeah, what he said. Sounds like you've got more experience than most of the little residential companies around here.

Are you around the Seymour area?

I would be more than glad to come down and work with you for the first day, do a section  and get you started.

No charge.

Getting the shingles staged up is the biggest part. I have some old tear off tools that you can use.

No, Floyds Knobs.  New Albany.  You and I actually PM'd about it previously.  I'm trying to make the most of the layoff situation and soften the financial blow. Thanks for the offer though.

If you use Diminesional shingles the HIp and ridge shingles are different.
