If it is an insert they are just sitting there.  New ones are cheap and easy to replace--any place that sells wood stoves will have them.

If you have a masonry fireplace and the crack is more than a hair open, you can use high temperature mortar to fill the crack.
Mix the mortar in a zip lock freezer bag, then snip off a corner and squirt it into the crack.
Try and pack some in with a small putty knife.
Strike it off level, wipe off the excess with a damp sponge and let it cure for a week or so.

The cracks usually have to get over 1/8 inch wide to cause any problem.
Flames do not get into small opening very much, and the brick is relatively thick, and backed up by plain brick.

If you pull it out and replace it, make sure you use refractory mortar.
