I'm in the process of replacing baseboard in 4 carpeted bedrooms. In the first room I pulled the carpet up from the tack strip first to slip the baseboard in, naturally I now have slack in the carpet. In the second room I set the baseboard with disturbing the carpet, and used a 1X3 to knock it down. I'm not as confident that I got the baseboard positioned correctly with the 2nd method though. Does anyone have any better methods they can share?

The base doesn't have to be snug against the floor with carpet. When I install base in a room before the carpet is in, I usually leave 3/8" gap between the bottom of the base and the floor. That makes it a little easier for the carpet guys to install carpet, they don't beat up the finish as bad and the carpet install looks alot better in my opinion.

Rent or buy a carpet kicker to fasten the carpet back on the tack strips.
