| I am looking to restore an M1 Garand for some range use and would like to know labor-wise, how much is involved in a project like this. Also what to look for when buying a Garand such as the amount of wood damage and how corroded the barrel has become (what else other than this is important to look for). What kind of price should I expect for a used one at the gun show that is "fair". |
My suggestion: Buy a Field Grade from the CMP and take your chances. Odds are you'll get a shooter and won't need to do a thing to it. Worst case scenario you send it off and have it rebarrelled . . . As for price, a CMP Field Grade will cost you just under $450 shipped to YOUR door. Buy the exact same gun at a gun show and you'll likely pay $700 or more . . . Here's the CMP Web site. You'll want to read the eligibility requirements (they're not hard to meet) and check out the forums for a quick education on the program. Lots of folks post photos of the guns they receive so you'll get an idea what to expect. |
| Check out the M1/M1A section on this forum for ideas on your Garand project. Trust me, you will get the right answers there. Oh, and I second the notion on the Field Grade Garands, I have one and other than a new Gas cylinder (the original one was well worn), everything is perfect and mine shoots like a dream. |

i looked into the civilian marksmanship program, looks simple enough. i've got to find a club/group which is affiliated with them before i can go any further. any suggestions? i looked around online and everybody seems to want $75-100 to become a member. i was thinking something cheaper (or free) would make jumping through these hoops worth the effort and actually save me some money. the feedback itself from the APM site is very good though, and their rifles have gotten nothing short of shining reports back from buyers so i'm absolutely interested in dealing with them. thanks for the help so far guys. |
A lot of folks simply join the Garand Collector's Association. I believe yearly dues are only $25. |
