Once again laid out the kerdi membrane. Measure and cut:
Measure out the curb and cut it to fit as well. It's sort of like wrapping a Christmas present: 
Mortar it in, I had "tray" on my mind so I used the 1/4" square trowel rather than the 3/16" triangle so it was a little soft underneath. I decided I would wait to mud the seams tomorrow when this dries up solid.

She's done most of our trim and helped with all the walls. Sherwin Williams Emerald line makes the walls very easy to look like a pro (I painted my way through college). An E1 and an apprentice that work for me came over this weekend and did my service upgrade with me. Went from a full 125A to a 200A with 20 some-odd open circuits  . It's overkill for sure, I could have just got a larger panel but what's the fun in that. Now I've got all the room I could ever need to play with. I'm going to immediately add a circuit for the recessed lighting in the basement, and a few over the winter for a circuit of outlets and another of lights in the garage. And I'll need a few for the kitchen in the fall.

While I know better than to roof a house with 24' to the ground I did take advantage of the opportunity to rebuild the flat portion of our roof where a cupela once stood. 
The platform is 6ft by 10ft and I wanted a solid deck that would allow me to build a cupela in the future when everything settles down. 
Pretty cool to see the roof when done, the fellas we hired had a drone. 
On Thursday the wife used vinegar to clean the marble bathroom floor. Not sure how or if I can repair the etch it left behind. Anyone have any ideas? This is a picture of the reflection of the ceiling light. You can see the right hand side is shiny because it hasn't been etched by vinegar.

And today I busted out the planer and jointer to clean up 20 boards for some door trim. It's amazing how good planets are at finding staples  so @FN64GR looks like I'll be ordering a set of knives for the belsaw after all! (I put the guard on the planer too)

When it comes to targeted ads I swear whoever sells those adjustable squares has my name on a list. I can't look at anything online without an ad for one of those things popping up! Problem is I don't know what I'd use it for! Hell I'd pay $7 just to stop seeing advertisements for the dang things! Good work on the trim. It's neat to see your basement almost done. |

Primed yesterday and painted today. 
I had posted earlier about a tub faucet which has failed from one of our bathrooms. Well I called Kingston Brass and told the gal what had happened and she asked for a picture. A few days later a new faucet kit arrived via FedEx  I gotta say I'm impressed.
Yeah I'll have to install it, but I thought it was pretty cool that a company would drop a couple hundred dollar item in the mail like that. |

New man door for the Garage. Got rid of the crappy steel builder grade door. Will go much better with the new door (also pictured) we have coming along with new windows in about 5 weeks.

Thanks all. It's a new house for the wife and I. We bought well and it appraised +17k so we've been working to make it ours and put in a little extra value. I modded/assembled 3 John Louis Home closet kits to make our master closet. It's hard to get a good picture in a walkin but it's approximately 5x15 and came out super nice.

Search around. They have 12" deep and 16" deep kits and then they have different versions of those kits. I'm into the closet about $2k and approximately $1400 of that is the closet kits. New paint, new lighting, new flooring, some trim etc. I was quoted $5,800 for a "custom closet" and I wouldn't have been this nice in my opinion.
I think I ordered through Joss & Main. Watch for sales and search for coupon codes too. I ordered two of these And one of these I have one 'open tower', a 7 ft and 4ft shelf and plenty of hardware and hanging rod left. Enough to do a standard closet upstairs. |

You guys all do some incredible work! I'm jealous of the skills you have.
My Saturday was spent making a firewood shelter. I decided last year to start updating my tool collection, so what comes after you buy tools? You find something to do with them. Was going to do a DIY thread but figured I'd pail in comparison to some here, and didn't take any build pics. Overall I was happy with how it came out:  Attached FileUsed an old pallet for the base, 6 1'x1' concrete blocks, a bunch of 2x4's, a pound of screws, and 2 pieces of the corrugated tin roof. Some 1x6s will be going on in the next week or so as time permits to close in the sides a bit. 3 trips to Lowes later , and I was happy with it. Helpful hint: check you have the right length screws before you leave the store.
Next spring, I plan on a stone fire pit. Next weekend is a serpentine belt and oil change on my truck, before the weather gets to bad. |

You know how hard it is to cut the angles for the roof stringers with zero idea what your doing, and a miter saw?

About the multiple trips thing: the best way to overcome that is to just buy too much stuff on the first trip. I don't always know what I'm doing (I hardly know what I'm doing), so when I'm standing there in the aisle debating if I need this one thing or how much of what to get, I just buy all of it. If you think you might need it, or are not sure, just get it. Then keep a tidy pile of stuff to return at the beginning of your next project. Places like HD and Lowes don't require you to provide a receipt for returns if you have the same credit card you purchased it with. The transactions are saved. I finally finished the basement. Tomorrow I'll scrub the floors and clear coat the ledge and then it's time to put the room back together. Just in time for football!!! It's been a few since I've posted an update. Spent the weekend with the family up north and enjoyed a little R&R. Life's no fun without some cabin projects.
We picked up an old hatchet from a rummage sale for a couple bucks. Looked like someone had been splitting rocks with it so while the wife was off collecting hazelnuts me and the kids decided to bring it back to life. Started by filing the deep gouges off the cutting edges and getting a shape back on it. 
Next we cut the handle off (it was cracked) and got it glowing red with a torch: 
After a dunk in some used motor oil my son was enjoying the warmth it retained. These projects are the best because it peaks his curiosity. 
Turned out all right, we'll find a handle and get it fitted up next trip.

This week we've continued on our saga to finish painting the house.
Spent a day taping the moldings off (I hate masking) but again the kids added their touch. 
It's fun when they're engaged, not much else you can do with a project like this and having a 2&4 year old running around! 
Wife picked up the last needed gallon of paint so there's really nothing holding us back now. I sprayed the sand texture about 2 hours ago. 
Gosh I can't wait to be done with painting.

I bought an axe at a flea market for $5. When it started raining today I grabbed the axe and went over to the band saw to saw off the bad handle. A friggin live mouse came out of the saw when the blade started spinning. It seems the mouse decide to make a house out of the inside of my band saw. Cleaned the saw out, then sawed the handle off. The little sob got in where the dust collector attached. Now I have to cap that.

Had to replace the glass insert trim on the front door, as a result of the kids always slammimg it, the weight of the glass breaking the trim over time.
Thankfully finding replacement trim was easy, didn't have to make it myself it. http://www.allaboutdoors.com/Therma-Tru-22-x-64-for-1-2-or-1-inch-glass-Surround-Only-No-Glass-1-Lite All done for now. Next up is to pull the door, replace the weatherstripping and bottom seal and correct that plumbness.

Damaged Italian marble & brass chandelier on Craigslist? Sure why not.

This one is missing some of the crystal so we'll have to find a few. 
I have a Craigslist problem... I've been fixing up that panel saw for a while. I still have a CL search set up and one hit my radar yesterday. They seem to run $700-$1300 used which is why I was comfortable buying a rusty frame for $75 blasting, painting, adding a new saw for $130 etc. this saw was listed for $200 
Being that I can't let a good deal invalidate my efforts I bought it  so I now have a project saw and a saw ready to cut.
Did I say I have a Craigslist problem? 
Oh and I sanded & painted by hand the edge of the deck where our stairway passes through.

I also spent some time monkeying with the vacuum forming machine in an effort to make some pieces which could be used as trim above the arched windows. I have 36 to do so I was trying to avoid having to cast them all one by one.
I bought a medallion from Amazon warehouse to see if I could transfer the detail to the pvc sheet. Another question I had was if the foam medallion would be sufficient to take the heat from the machine. 
Now I didn't drill any holes for the vacuum to pass through the pattern as I wasn't sure how much it would matter. I also only let the pvc bake for 10 minutes as I was trying to avoid such a large sheet from curling under the heat. It didn't take to the pattern very well. 
The heat caused the foam pattern to expand and crack. I'll have to make a mold and cast one from plaster as a pattern if I want to try again. 
Now to think of more alternatives... |

Belt sanded the paint of some 60 year old doors and then cut them up to use for stock.

I finally finished this chair. I hate doing the finishing stuff - I have no dedicated finishing room, so it ties up everything for a week or two. I built it a couple years ago, and had it painted with milk paint, but it needed a couple coats of BLO.
