Hey guys.
What is up with masons? Are they all dead beats? Ive had one flake out on estimate and another showed up looking like a broke billy bob thorton type with super high prices and un professional work timelines. So now I'm considering doing it myself. Id need to replace the first few runs of bricks and do a new crown. How hard is that in reality? |
| It depends on how high it is and the pitch of the roof. Humping buckets of mortar up a ladder or scaffold is a bitch. We start off at $1200 and it goes up from there. Are you sure that is all it needs, because most everyone that calls us for those same repairs needs more work than they know. |

I just replaced a chimney from the roof up last fall. House built in 1974, single level.
12/4 pitch (not steep at all), about 4' tall, 3' x 2' foot print, poured mortar cap. I thought I just needed some areas repointed...until the guy stuck a screw driver though the side of my chimney. $1500 |

Use a chain hoist.
You can even get an electric one. Rental places have them also. The 1 ton is complete overkill but the 20 feet might be useful. 20 ft 1 ton I put an A/C condenser on a reinforced almost flat roof between a house and a garage. Needed one extra level of scaffold to lift it high enough. Used about five 2x8s on edge and clamped together to make the chain lift support 'beam.' No problem lifting a 3.5 ton rated condenser. About 500 pounds? Took one hand on the chain lift loop. |

Thanks guys!
The original contractor showed up today and to my surprise was ready to work. He tore out all the bad brick and put new brick up. Hes supposed to come back tomorrow and build a form and pour the cap. Hopefully all goes well and the price is what its supposed to be. I would have ended up doing it myself but I was nervous id mess it up. We just bought this house, its a 70's split entry snd its got projects, most of which I can handle but I'll be back here with more questions Im sure. This is my first house. Very exciting but also kind of scary with the responsability! My next project is a 6' fence to keep the dag and my 3 year old mini me confined to the back yard.
