Do you recommend any software to help visualize what it will look like?  I am going to redo the front and need ideas.  I'm hoping to be able to put plants in the design to see how they will look together.  I would also need it tell me the names since I do not know them.  Any other sites that could help?

I've been the same boat. Best I can recommend is driving around your neighborhood and taking pictures of what you like. Go to a local shop (not big box) for suggestions and recommendations. Take a simple diagram of your setup plus pictures of what you like. This has worked for me in the past to get ideas going.

Google can help too for looking up common landscaping plants/shrubs

It doesn't sound like this is what you want.... But you can also pay a landscaping company to come out and design something for you. I would think they could for $100 or less. You wouldn't necessarily have to buy from them or have them do the work, but you would be paying for a professionals opinion

Yes i was thinking of driving around but the problem is that I have no idea what plants are what.  Also the area I want to do is kind of odd shaped.  Not many houses in area have something like this.

I've been thinking the same over the past several years, but my horticultural knowledge ends at cutting the grass.
I am fortunate to have several very nice nurseries near me, who I can go to for planning and they'll give me a discount on plants too.
Now all I have to do is save up the money.

Are you near a university that has landscape design classes?   You might be able to offer up you property as a guinea pig and get 20+ proposals from students.  Regardless, the instructor would definitely know about the latest software.

Last few houses had no landscaping so I just sketched the exteriors, jotted down the dimensions, and went to the nursery with a tap measure. I had already researched which plants were good for the area.  I created nice mulch beds within the sketches and that helped establish how many and what size plants I purchased. Keep in mind colors and seasons for the plants (some change colors). You'll want layers, ie low ground cover, an intermediate shrub/flower and then some high stuff light grasses. When your looking at the stuff at the nursery, keep in mind the stuff is gonna double or triple in size so leave yourself some room when planting.
