Okay, here is the situation. Our front door (wood) faces the morning sun, and we have a glass storm door. So, the door gets hot. We recently re-painted the door with latex based primer and paint. We quickly learned about front door paint bubbling under such conditions, and it bubbled BAD. The door is a medium-shade of red, and my wife is dead-set on this color, so lighter is not an option.
Our plan is to strip the door back down bare and start again. I have read that oil-based primer may help avoid bubbles because it will seal the door. Any suggestions from the experienced pros at ARFCOM?!?!?! |

If the door surface is contaminated, no paint will stick.
If the door is oozing sap, no paint will stick. Strip old paint to bare wood. Sand surfaces. Wipe with solvent (acetone). Apply boiled linseed oil and allow to dry (24 hours). Pay special attention to the spots that soak up a lot of oil, soak up no oil and the areas that blistered. Seal with shellac. Re-hang door for a few days to see if wood oozes or shellac blisters. If it's still okay, sand the shellac to break the surface sheen and prime with oil-based primer, then oil-based paint. |
