My first post on AR15 so dont be mad if Ive messed up in the posting.

anyways, this post is a DIY multicam paint job for you weapon of choice.

I am painting my Mosin Nagant stock for this project.

The supplies needed for the job are:
1.Masking material (I used vinyl sticker sheets, its a standard 8 and half by 11 inch sheet)
2.Exacto Blades or Razors
3.Primer
4.Paints
5.Sand Paper (Possibly if you need to sand down anything, Varying grits. I used 180, 220 and 800)

The sticker paper can be taken from a lowes, They laid me off so I took a bunch of their sheets but I think theyd give some away freely.

The paints I used are some base Primer, Khaki, Flat Brown, Satin Brown Boots, Satin Oregano, Satin Hunter Green, Pistachio, Pebble, and Dark Brown.
All the paints are in a flat or satin. Also most of the paint is a rustoleum brand, I like them more than Krylon personally.

Alltogether the paint costed me about $50, but I wanted to get as close as I could to the design.
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

My first step of course is too take off everything from the stock which i was painting. I wanted to leave the barrel black still. I just wanted to paint out the wood stock.

So dissassemble as needed.

Clean your painting surface. My mosin had a lacquer coating that I needed to sand first but modern metal rifles may just need a cleaning.
WD40 is good but i used brake parts cleaner to help strip off the lacquer.
Brake parts cleaner si really good at removing oils and debris. but be careful as it is mean stuff, i think this stuff should be used instead of pepper spray for personal protection.

Anyways clean your surface and try not to touch it with dirty hands, nitrile gloves will help alot.

After your surface is prepped you can lay down your primer base.
I used about 3 coats and sanded after the last coat to get a finer surface for the wood. I usually wait about 45mins to a day before apply the following coat of paint.

After you have your area primed and prepped you can move on to the first actual color coat.

This is the primed stock next to the barrel cover:

Sanded:

For the first color coat its good to understand the blending. the base coats are a blending from the satin browns to the kahki or sand. I blended in the pistachio because it does fade to a very light green in some points at the base coat. Multicam is a very confusing pattern, thats why it works so well but trying to figure it out is kinda hard.

So i blend in my colors spraying from a distance:
Starting with my darks and transfering to the light areas.
This was my first attemp that I didnt like.

So I started over....

I feel like it could have used even more brown tones as the base i later found out.

The next step is to cut out masking material for the next layer of color. Greens.

The next layer is a Dark green to lighter green fade. I used the hunter green and oregano for this. the orageno is much like OD Green.
This is where I cut out the masking using the LOWES vinyl paper and a razor. I used my multicam pants  to draw my patterns on the sheets then cut them out.

This is an example of just a small section I would paint.

I would use both the negative mask and the possitive for these layers.
My masked stock:

Time consuming. yes.

when your confident with your masking, Spray out your greens. I sprayed out my hunter green and overlapped it fading to the OD Green (Oregano).

Really fade out the dark green areas as it only shows up in smaller amounts. It really helps to have the material in hand as a source.
Let it dry a bit and peel away the masking.

Here is my unmasked layer of greens:
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8148/7412414772_59abe991e6_c.jpghttp://farm6.staticflickr.com/5312/7412415862_d9f7a140a0_c.jpg

But there is another layer of greens that you need to add on top to blend even further if you want a more "True to roots" effect.

The 2nd layer should look as so, masking off once again:
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7123/7412416382_a6c79f20d7_c.jpghttp://farm6.staticflickr.com/5469/7412416854_e0a40ba40c_c.jpg

when peeling the masking off it took some of the damn paint with it. Sanding down these areas and re-applying paint is the solution. the masking can be sticky and pull uncured paints so be cautious.
more to come soon...

Some people here might take issue with that statement.
