So I have to replace a large chunk of drywall in my house.  Squared up the opening today and went to go pickup a sheet of drywall.  While pulling the old sheet off I found a barcode and verified that the old sheet was 1/2".  So I walk the drywall isle and I find a 1/2" sheet of lightweight. I think to myself that lightweight would be nice since I'm doing this myself.  Get it home and put it into place and the sheet isn't as thick as the old stuff.  Check pull out a tape measure and the sheet is only 3/8" thick.  Why the hell is 3/8" thick material sold as 1/2"?  In most places that would be called fraud.

At least that is fairly commonly known.  I'm kindof tempted to try paying them with 85% real money from now on.

Did you measure the 4' edge or the 8' edge?

The 8' edge is tapered to allow for a tape joint.

Don't feel bad, first time I cut drywall I used a Skilsaw.  Dust everywhere.  My dad came home and showed me and brother how to score and snap the drywall.  I still feel stupid over that one!

It drives me nuts too.  It's not just lumber.  I was building something out of concrete blocks.  Nominally, they are 8"x16"x16".  You think they'd actually be that size, wouldn't you?

They were something like 7.5" x 7.5" x 15.5".  It threw off my whole project and I had to redesign it using the actual measurements.

I'd gotten where I just bring my tape measure with me because I don't trust any measurement when it comes to building materials.

I always laugh when a tool or materials are advertised as "Contractor Grade."  All that means is that it's the cheapest garbage that the contractor can get away with.

A few years back, I had a helper ask how long to shake a can of spray paint. I told him that it would stop rattling when it was ready. 20 minutes later he's still at it. I tossed him another can and told him that the one he was working on must be defective.

I have to ask because my curiosity is getting the best of me; how did you get to the drywall isle?  Was there a bridge or was the water shallow enough that you could just wade over there?

As far as I know concrete blocks have always been sized so the block + 1 motar joint comes out to the even dimension
Build a wall with 10 courses of 8" block and you have a 80" high wall
