I'm planning on installing these cabinets:

I plan on going for a similar look, with differing cabinet heights and crown on top of the cabinets.

In figuring out my game plan of how to do this, I can only come up with one option to make the crown of the shorter cabinets hit the sides of the taller cabinets, and that is to use blocking to bring the taller cabinets out into the room a few inches. Is this the normal way of making this work?

All of the wall cabinets are a standard 12" depth.

Custom cabinet carcasses with crown terminating to the sides of the deeper cabinets is the normal way.

How were you planning on filling the spaces on the sides of the cabinet that you blocked out?

Also, careful about mounting the cabinets with regard to accidental crown intersections of varying heights. I've been that situation before with quadruple stack pre-finished crap, with no extra on hand. One piece terminated flat on one side into a cabinet and ran onto crown that was a cupple inches high on the other. I spent a couple/few hours shaping and filing that cope. Pain in the ass.

The cabinets in your picture are different depths. As Arms reach mentioned you will have to rework the side panels to make it look right.

Normally "deeper" cabinets in an installation like this-are actually deeper boxes.

Are you aware of this and wanting a way around it?

I talked to the supplier. They just used 2x4 blocking behind the cabinets to make them look deeper. Then I'd assume use filler pieces to fill the gaps.

Custom cabinets are out...3x over budget and 12 week lead time, I'd be better off making my own.

So I'm using RTA cabinets, which are all standard 12" depth. I may just put the crown on the taller cabinets and skip it on the shorter in between. How do you guys think that would look?

I think that would look better than blocked out cabinets.

I think the crown on all the cabinets will look great if you plan it right so crown is not meeting half way up on other crown so the coping becomes a nightmare.

But how will you hide the blocking in the back of the cabinets?  Trim of some kind?  I mean..are they going to supply you with matching wood to fill that?

Or what?

Essentially, yes. You can get 1/4" thick pre-finished filler pieces. My plan would be to rip the filler pieces to fill the gaps. It would only be seen under the cabinet, and the 6" above the cabinets, so it would not be in a highly visible area.

Then that sounds like it would work great.

I think, though, that you should lay it out on graph paper and plan it so you can put the crown on all the cabinets.

The look really depends on that, and without it, you won't get the same effect.

If the female in your life has her heart set on that kind of design/look, it will be worth the extra effort to make it awesome.

If that is your plan, keep in mind that the face frame overlaps the side of the cabinet by about 1/4". You should use the 1/4" pre-finished ply to cover the whole side of the cab including the blocking. That is, if you don't want to look at the seam..
