Have a question about chimney chases. I am installing a heatilator wood burning Fireplace. The chimney chase is on the outside of the building and travels up the first and second floor before hitting the attic deck and becoming its own free standing structure for approx 10-12 feet. I am trying to determine if the part that is free standing needs to be insulated (and fireproofed for that matter). Code where I live says the interior of the chase must have 5/8 gyp., but only in the "building envelope", which I assume means once the chimney chase is free standing, its outside the envelope. The main concern I have though is insulation. Instructions say the chase must be insulated, but is unclear as to when the chase becomes freestanding. It seems in the instruction pics, there is only insulation in the part of the chase that is attached to the side of the building. Anyone have any experience with this? See page instruction below. Thanks. |

Quoted: As per the illustration shows only the top can being exposed. You may need to build the chase all the way up with no exposed piping. I need to rephrase. I will be only exposing about 2 feet at the top. My main question is insulation and gyp board once it is above the attic deck? |
