I have a 10,000 BTU window air conditioner that has just started giving me some problems.  I turn the air conditioner on and it will run for about 10-20 minutes and then trip the surge protector and shut off. The only loads I have on the surge protector are the air conditioner and a small freezer. I plan to try a different surge protector tomorrow but I have a feeling it isn't that. Has my air conditioner went out? It was bought new in 2002 so it does have some age on it. I'm not afraid of doing some DIY tests on it with a multimeter but I'm not sure what to check. If anyone can recommend what to check please let me know what. Any other input is appreciated.

Thanks.

If it is like most AC units, it sounds like it is tripping when the compressor turns on. (Most AC run for 3-10 minutes after being unplgged before the compressor will turn on).

Remove the surge protector and plug the AC directly into a heavy duty extension cord, or directly into the outlet. Surge protectors can go flaky and many aren't made to handle the current draw of an AC. If the breaker trips, then it is most likely a problem with the AC. If the AC works fine, then it is the surge protector.

This is the right answer, but I would try replacing that surge protector first... on many I've had problems with high-draw and high-start––up loads.  Swap in a good heavy duty appliance extension cord.
