Also cross posted in the Home Theater forum...

This afternoon when my daughters were watching a movie on our DVD/VCR burner combo, the power went out for about 15 min. Now the DVD player won't turn on.

I have no idea why the power went out. No storms, high winds, or anything. Its a nice sunny day. TV and Wii work fine and are on the same circuit.

Sharp DV-R340

Any idea's on how to troubleshoot or make this thing run again?

Thanks!

Is this just a DVD player, or a DVR of some sort?

DVD players are pretty integrated units, there isn't a whole lot to do for them.  Inspect the power supply for bulged/blown capacitors first.  Then inspect the power supply and other board(s) for obviously blown/damaged components.  Then, measure the voltage output(s) of the power supply.

If no damage is obvious, and the power supply is good, then it's highly unlikely that you'd be able to diagnose, source, and/or replace whatever IS damaged.

Many DVD players have a fuse inside.  Open it and look for it near where the power cord comes in.  Easy to replace.

If you take it apart, be aware some capacitors hold a charge after the AC is pulled. Some have enough to kill you.

Thanks all, I'll pull it apart in a little bit and look for any obvious damage.

GlutealCleft: This unit is a VCR and DVR combo player.  (nice name! )

have you tried unplugging it and holding the power button for 30 seconds to a minute?

sounds like a stupid step but I've had it work on a few different electronic devices including my receiver which sometimes acts up after a power outage
in fact the last time my receiver acted up I think what ended up working was holding the power button while unplugging it and then holding the button in for a while, releasing it, and plugging back in

I guess holding in the button with no power connected drains the capacitors or something and causes a reset
I've had it work when PCs act up too, in fact with one model of HP used by the company my company does helpdesk for we would have to do that multiple times a week for different users to get the NIC to be recognized again after it would suddenly stop working

Pulled it apart on Friday.  The fuse looked fine, no obvious damage.  Closed it back up, plugged it in, and it turned on, so I was able to get the disc out to return.  I still haven't hooked it back to the TV (was out of town all weekend), but hopefully I did something to reset it.
