I have a Purex Triton pool pump that is about 12 years old. Other than keeping the basket clean, I have done no service work on it. It runs about 9 hours each night, so it has quite some mileage on it. A few days ago, the pump started to whine quite loudly. The problem is intermittent - it will whine for several minutes, then go quiet fo several minutes, then the whine comes back. Other than the whine, it appears to be functioning OK. The user manual is not all that helpful. Can anyone suggest a possible root cause for the whining, and point me to the parts I need to replace ?

Might be a seal between motor/pump.
Google the parts diagram and tear it apart if you're inclined.
At 12yo ,   I'd make sure the suspect parts are available.
Last, consider the lifespan. Yours is within a reasonable lifespan to keep or replace.
If you aren't going to DIY ... but can remove the pump and take it in, it might save a fair amount.

Stay safe

My guess is that one of the motor bearings is starting to fail. One option would be to take the pump and motor to a local repair shop and have the unit rebuilt, before it fails totally. Having the bearings and seals replaced should cost a  lot less  than a whole new unit.

the bearing is going if it the rear easy repair front is a hole another story
if the rear plate covers the back end of motor you can remove and try to figure out were noise is coming from

if you decide to replace the pump go to ebay and search Hayward pool pump. Usually can get a new motor, pump and basket for around $150-$160 with free shipping.

That is almost half what a replacement cost me locally.

Is it sucking air? If there is a bad seal on the hair catch compartment it could be sucking air, pulling the water completely out of the catch reservoir then re-priming itself.

When it loses prime, the motor will whine loudly because the vanes of the pump are spinning faster.
