Have an RCA LCD flatscreen that is a few years old and is a 720p. I am having a problem that when it is connected to the cable box (high def) that the screen sits in a 16:9 aspect ratio and the picture does not take up the entire screen. My only 'fix' to this has been to stretch the picture, but its blurry. I think I need to get it to change to a 4:3 ratio, but the TV wont let me. My concern is that this may be due to the cable box being connected with RGB wires instead of a HDMI. Would this make a difference?
Whenever I put a DVD into my PS2 which is connected to the TV by the yellow/white/red cables the PS2 came with, the screen is automatically full so I know it isn't the TV. Any ideas on what to do or look for? |

Any ideas on what to do or look for? Could be the cable box settings like the other guy said, but if the RCA is like most other LCD's each of the inputs can have their own custom settings sure something isn't off in the component settings? Also you do know that when watching non HD channels its going to have lines right? |

I go to the settings menu for my TV and there is nothing as far as screen size or aspect. I can change the aspect ratio on my remote for the TV via an aspect change button, but it won't change and stays at the 16:9. However, as I said, my PS2 works perfectly and gets a full screen. Would it have anything to do with an upconvert/passthrough etc settings? Or what am I looking for on the box? |

I don't know what cable box they use over there, I have a Scientific Atlanta, which gives you a picture size option from the settings button, Normal would be the correct setting for that, that gives you full screen on HD channels and sidebars on SD channels. On my tv the aspect ratio adjustments are in the video preferences where you have the backlight, contrast, color temp and all the other calibration options. Still have the manual for the TV? If not RCA website will probably have a PDF one you can look through. |
| also not all shows are in the aspect ratio your tv shows, there are so many different formats mostly any show or movie you will watch will have some type of bars. there are zoom or full settings you could try, it will zoom in the screen or stretch the sides. I dont have high def for cable so I do the wide setting but now alot more shows look good since I use my tivo and tell it im using 16:9, it mostly fixes the pic for me. I also use my tv for the computer monitor |

Not all broadcasts that are in HD are 16:9 aspect ratio. Some are 4:3 with side bars added. These bars could be black or they could also contain a logo for that particular channel. That makes sense, but it's 100% of the channels that give me the bars. HD or not. |

The only othe roptions I get for the TV format are to stretch the screen, which makes it take up the entire picture, but makes it blurry. I understand that some HD channels would have the bar go away...but this is for 100% of the channels... |

Some of the Hd channels will still have bars as not all the broadcasts are in HD, The HD movie channels are always in HD, I'd check out the manual for the TV. |
| It now sounds more like a cable box issue if all of the channels are like that and the TV is in the correct mode. I was doing some work for a buddy of mine and could not get one of his HD TV's to display properly(the other 4 worked fine, same model). Turns out it was a bad cable box. HDMI can be a pain in the ass. |

If your box is a SA 8300 there is a video output wizard you can run. With the cable box off and your tv on, press Guide and Info simultaneously on the front of the cable box. Use the remote to run through the wizard (I chose Advanced setup). A previous owner may have selected a format that isn't best for your TV. ETA: If for some reason you want to run different outputs from the cable box and be able to choose them (after you have selected them in the wizard mentioned above), you need to have the cable box on and the tv on and hit settings twice, scroll to Set: Picture Format and change that to Fixed instead of Auto. Exit out of that and when you hit Settings once and scroll to Picture Format your choices will be there (selectable by the left/right nav button). |
