just wondering, did Christian Bale actually whack all of those people, or in his delusional mind make all of the events up?

I literally just finished the novel yesterday.  Hoping that the book would clear things up better than the movie...I thought it was just as ambiguous as the film suggested.  The book goes into much more detail about Bateman than the movie does however.  Not a bad read at all, but it is one of the most gruesome novels I've read to date (referencing any chapter with the title "Girl" or "Girls", etc)

I can see how you would find things confusing at the end of the movie.

I think that the movie makes it seem like it didn't happen, that it was just some strange fantasy of Bateman's.

Read the book. It blew me away. It starts out slow, but as the book progresses so does Bateman's insanity. And there is no question at the end as to whether or not he has killed.

Haven't read the book but the movie made it pretty clear it was all in his head.

In the book he did it.

Not fantasy he did it.

In the movie he's taking perscription drugs mixed cocain and I think it's obvious it was in his head. The guy basically sat in his office all day and had some pretty odd fantasies.

Good movie though.

see, in the movie he goes back to the apartment, no bodies, no mess or crime scene tape.

hell, people didnt even know his name!

so to me, in the movie, it was all fantasy.

Whether the killings in either the book or the movie actually happened, is open for debate.

(Which, I'm sure, was exactly the author's intent.)

i was assigned to read the book for my freshman english comp class in college.  it was kind've left up in the air if it was real or not in the book.

just remember, this is not an exit.

I seriously doubt he did it in the book.  There were constant references to "am I dreaming" "will I wake up" and remember when he goes on the killing spree, and hears helicopters and SWAT teams about to break in, yet the next scene continues as if nothing happened.

I've always felt that the movie's biggest flaw was leaving out the "This Is Not An Exit" sign at the end.
(IIRC, you can see the sign, but the lettering is blurred.)
I think that sign is vital to the ending.

IMO, that sign was Ellis' way of telling the reader, even if you choose to believe that Patrick hadn't actually killed anyone (and that is left up to you to decide-I've never believed that he did), it doesn't really matter... you're not off the hook. We're not off the hook.
No matter what, Patrick is still a well-nigh fucked up individual... a by-product of the world he exists in. A human bereft of humanity.
And, in all likelihood, not the only one of his kind.

Of course, that's just my opinion... what the hell do I know?

I read the book thinking it was a dark comedy, I laughed my way through 95% of it.

The book was nuts... after a few times I Had to skip over the music review parts though.

The part that always stands for me from the book is when he stabs the kid... I think in a aquarium or something.
