My brother has both a PS3 and a separate dedicated Blue Ray player. He claims the picture quality of blue ray movies is superior when played on the dedicated player than on the PS3. The PS3 blue ray picture on my 1080p 60in TV is very good, but doesn't snap like I thought it would....looks just a little better than my upverting DVD player. Any of ya'll know if there are any issues along these lines ? Doesn't really make sense to me for there to be a picture quality difference between the two but I'm not an AV expert either. Thanks for any help. Fred |
Okay, I could maybe understand saying that if you were on a 30", maybe, but a 60"? You seriously need to either: A) Adjust your TV's settings and make sure all your connections are done right, because something is way off B) Get glasses |
Is the firmware update the same as the system update? I know that I'll see a system update notice now and then when I first start up my PS3. Also, the quality of the blueray is noticeably better than my upconverting dvd player. |
Yes, the PS3 is updated via the system update option. |
Which dedicated player does he have? Perhaps the $1000 ones might have a better video quality, but everything I have read on the AVS forum says that the PS3 is the best of the mid-low priced blu-ray players. |
That may be "percieved quality" which is hard to measure. Unless they are outputting at 1081p or higher, or the PS3/monitor isn't set up right, then there's no difference. |
No you can use component or dvi. HDMI is the best way to go though. |

My I suggest you posting which movies you watched? Not all Blu-ray movies are "stunning". Some are quite bad. Other were artistically made to look a certain way. So let us know. I've watched a bunch of movies to know which are on the crap end of the picture quality end. |
Yup, this may well be the issue. If you're watching an 80s movie that's been converted to Blu-ray, yeah, it's probably not gonna look a whole lot better than an upconverted DVD. The difference in new movies though, is night and day. Case and point Kingdom of Heaven, which you always see displayed at kiosks to show the dif between Blu-ray and DVD... there is a SIGNIFICANT difference you have to be blind to not see. |
I've seen that before. I'm not arguing that Blu-ray doesn't look a lot nicer than DVD, but in that side-by-side comparison the "DVD" side is seriously garbled and is nowhere near reflective of how the movie really looks on DVD. |
www.monoprice.com ETA: Monster Cable is probably the biggest scam there is in consumer electronics. |
Nope. Pear is the biggest scam going. gizmodo.com/gadgets/more-bull/pear-cables-withdraws-from-james-randis-1m-challenge-313361.php |
| I've heard that the stand alone players are better purely for the fact that they can output at 120hz, where as most playstations except for the original 60 gigs, output at 60 hz. This has more to do with the refresh rates, than the resolution, but can be a noticable difference if your TV supports this refresh rate. |
There is no player or will there be a player that does 120. The reason is that the source is done at 24. Therefore a player will either do 24, 30, 60. Now a Display on the other hand can do muliples handle 120. Which if you notice that 24, 30 and 60 are all multiples of 120. |

I am following the OP's setup. I just purchased the Samsung 50" 650 Touch of Red plasma Saturday. I also purchased a Samsung up scaling dedicated DVD player at the same time. I am disappointed with the upscaling DVD player so I just ordered the PS3 80gig an Bluetooth remote from Amazon. I hope I am not disappointed. OP, what was your outcome? |
You will not be disappointed. I hav ethe PS3 40gig, and I am still amazed at the picture when I watch a movie in BR DVD. |
I think the suggestion regarding which particular movie I am watching has merit. I've started paying attention and some movie's, especially the more recently released movies with special effects, do look better. I also need to investigate the firmware update. BTW...I am using HDMI cables. Again thanks to all. Fred |
