Control was a fantastic movie. A black and white film adaptation of Debbie Curtis's autobiography of her short and painful marriage to Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis. Ian was an extremely talented writer and singer but had many demons he had to deal with including epilepsy, depression, and self esteem issues. Ian's problem was he wrote and sang to try to control or heal his inner demons while others around him were performing to get laid, get high, get famous, or get rich. It seems all anyone wanted, of the up and coming young star, was to ride his coattails and make money off him (and Joy Division). Feeling he had ruined his, his wife's and his daughters lives, he hung himself prior to Joy Division starting what was touted to be a ground breaking American tour that "would have propelled them to levels of fame not seen since the Beatles or Stones." All the actors performances, especially in the musical numbers, were outstanding, great soundtrack. (Four stars ****) |
