Equipment:
Samsung HLT-6187SAX 61" 1920x1080
Philips DVDR 3505 (upconverting)

I am having issues with a short image and wide short people on the screen when using this player.  I am using standard commercial made DVDs and have the TV set to 16:9 and the DVDR is set to 1080.  When watching a widescreen image, the image fills the screen from side to side, but is shorter than I would like with images distorted too wide.

I am using the HDMI input and the TV set to the appropriate input source.

Is this what you have to live with in the HD world?  The image is incredible, but distorted.

Any advice?

Is the DVD itself a widescreen format dvd?  If not, that is your problem.  Your converting a 4:3 DVD to 16:9 in the player.

If that's not the case then I can't help.

Correct both the dvd player and tv have controls for turning 4:3 into 16:9. You want those turned off on both so a normal screen is shown as a normal screen. Widescreen will always play perfect as there is nothing to change.

DVD is widescreen.  If I change the TV to 4:3 the image doesn't fill the screen, it is short and narrow.
