I did a search to make sure this wasn't a dupe... so if it is it's because someone can't spell.... anyone going to see it? Doesn't look bad... the CG rendered Angelina Jolie is frackin hot!!! I had higher expectations for how they would do Grendel though. From the previews he looks pretty stupid. I've always pictures him to look more monstrous and/or demonic.... that thing just looks like a grizzle pile of walking shite. |

I saw the preview for it at the gun store on Friday. Looks super neat! 13th Warrior (Antonio Banderas) was based on a book "Eaters of the Dead" which was supposed to be an outsider's perspective on the whole Beowulf story. The book was fantastic but the movie lost a bit of that edge. I hope this "Beowulf" is great because that ancient story has captivated me since I was a child.

I saw it tonight and would give it a 4 out of 5. It followed the story quite close as best I could remember. The CGI was a bit irritating at first but then you just get use to it and move on. The odd thing was I would swear that there were some live action scenes but others were very cartoonish. I could also have done without the TONS of MAN ASS. |
If it had not be a cartoon it would have been rated 'R' for sure. Naked dudes The moral of the story is that pride and arrogance may get you so far but you will have to pay the piper at some point. It has been a long time since I read the story and to be honest I didn't like it when I read it, but I did not remember all the Christianity references in the story. Was that a new addition? |
Yes. There was no nostalgia in the text for the good old days, before the Roman Christ killed off heroism. (Hollywood comic-book horseshit) I just watched it, went in with low expectations so wasn't disappointed. It WAS Shrek for adults; they need to be more subtle with the CGI |
From what I understand, the Beowulf poem was written in pre-Christian times, and transcribed by monks who ADDED all the references to god and christianity. This makes sense, since monks and other members of the church were able to read and write. The actual author of Beowulf is unknown. |

Saw it today and was very disappointed, I think that the live action version with Gerald Butler (Beowulf & Grendel) was way frigging cooler without any of the CG or SFX junk. Great story and good acting that wasn't overshadowed by crappy computer generated images. Just my 2 cents. |
The elegance of Beowulf lies in it's graceful and simple storyline. It is the ultimate tale of heroism and honor. I have seven translations of it, and every one is like a different story. I never CEASE to be impressed with the structure and beauty of the poem. You have to ask yourself, WHY is Beowulf so popular? What about it made it endure for all these centuries? It's sheer age is inconsequential in the face of the author's ability to evoke such imagery and emotion from so short and simple a work. |

It was ok I think Grendel was stupid looking but overall OK I am always amused by people thinking D&D type stories and the Hemingway male character as being some sort of 20th century invention I annoyed a HS english teacher by mentioning Beowulf when he was explaining to us that Rambo and similar characters were pretty much invented by Hemingway That teacher was/is a retard who tried way too hard to to appear deep and thoughtful |

I saw it in total 3D at a local joint. I liked it, it had some cool parts but I think it could have been a lot better. If you can see it in 3D do it because it gives it a whole other feel. Oh one REAL downside was that I had to pay 8.50 for a ticket and this was the early bird special. It would have been 10 if i had wnet any later... |
![]() ![]() ![]() Out of ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We gotta make the gals happy, don't we? After all, we guys got Jolie semi-nude. |
You do realize beowulf was an ever evolving tale, set towards its audience. Christian themes began to be included about the time the monks wrote the tale down, but before that they weren't included.... Beowulf was not written by a single person and the movie did a nice tie in for grendel->>grendels mother-->>dragon, where as the poem just kinda jumped to the dragon. |

the 3d was frigging awesome! the movie itself sucked rotten ass. what a worthless bunch of characters, not a moral or dignified bone in the entire crew, except for the porky sidekick. angelina's character was pathetic, put in for the prurient interest of 13-14 yo boys. |
I believe the moral of the story to ver pertinent in our times. No matter how bad ass or powerful you are, pussy will be your undoing. Now tell me that isn't the truth. Slick Willy and Kobe Bryant come to mind - fucking tards. |

I liked it, the additions to the plot made it interesting. They did't try to make beowulf a respectable disney hero, which I liked. As far as bastardizing the text, its true, but who cares. The text is long and boring and had been bastardized by the monks that wrote it down anyhow. The CGI-ness didn't bother me, although it did seem odd to take such high-dollar actors and CGI them. They should be replacing actors and leaving them homeless on the streets damnit! |
aaahhh, ok, then in that case it did it's job very well. |
Big mistake. Seeing it in 3D on a big screen completes the movie. I liked the updating of the story line & give it 4 drinking horns out of 5. Best use of technology in a 3D movie. BTW, anyone else think Zemeckis was planning on Sean Bean playing Beowulf? |
