Watching it on the FMC for at least the 10th time. Poor Po-han(Mako) when the sliced up his chest.
Great story, Steve McQueen and guns. What more can you ask for.
I love the ending when he is running around with the BAR.

One of the most under-rated movies of all time.  I like the storyline and undertones too.

I don't think I've ever seen the whole thing start to finish.  I always come across it on cable after it has started.  But I always make sure to watch for the BAR action.  I need to just buy it on DVD <available?>

Nice to see sailors that actually look like sailors, unlike the proposed USN uniform mess.  Cracker jacks/whites or dungarees + dixie cup hats, not NavPat camo

Excellent movie,

But the book is even better. If you're looking for a great summer read, check it out.

Don't forget the '03 Springfield Steve uses to put poor Po-han out of his misery.

Movie is a classic and they just don't make um like Steve anymore.

My guess is that Ol' Steve was not unfamiliar with any of those weapons.

Gotta disagree with that one. I thought the book was too long. Filled to the brim with jib jab narration. Especially towards the end.

I thought the movie captured the essence of the story far better than the book.

Another book turned to movie that the movie was better was The Last Of The Mohicans.

The book was pretty had to get through, for me at least, where as the movie captured the story in an engaging fashion.

As always YMMV

You can tell that McQueen was in the USMC by the way he handled the weapons in that film. Using the BAR from the shoulder and not the hip really goes against the Hollywood Gunfighting School Theory.

I love how he uses his helmet and axe in the blockade scene.

Steve was a decorated Marine.

I watched LeMans last week. Another great movie.

Well,

I agree with ya on LOTM, so maybe I should reread TSP before recommending it.

IIRC, and I beleive I saw it on ARFCOM, so it must be true, that was HIS BAR, he owned it.

Mcqueen was a dude's dude.

I remember my parents taking me to see it when I was a kid; I was 6 at the time. I didn't get it and was thinking WTF?! The scene where the Chinese guy got chewed up in the engine room stuck with me for many years, as did the mercy-killing. I just didn't get it... I thought he missed the guy with the knife and shot his friend by accident.

I saw it again a few years ago and things were a whole lot clearer.
