I've not read the book "The Right Stuff." But I've read Chuck Yeager's autobiography. And in some parts it closely parallels and relates to events in "The Right Stuff."

"What's your name?"

"Gus"

"Gus? Gus?! We can't have an astronaut named Gus!"
"What's your middle name?"

"Ivan."

"Gus is good."

The aborigine's fire and sparks and the fireflies in John Glen's flight was totally whacked out.

Poor Gus screwed the Pooch and didn't get invited to the White House.  "It just blew!!!"

The scenes like when yeager broke the sound barrier, there are no bright lights or howling goblins.  Just some good ol mach buffet.

Yet both actually happened.  Neither had anything to do with the other, of course.

I remember seeing this in the theater back when I was a youngster.  One of my favorites.

"No bucks, no Buck Rodgers."

"My name, Jose Jimenez.  Occupation, astronaut."
"I see you brought some of your gear with you today.  Is that your crash helmet?"
"Oh I hope not."

I saw that movie when I was 11 years old at the Byrd Theater in Richmond.  One awesome flick, my wife gave me the DVD for Christmas a couple years ago.

DVDTracker that is the best part of the movie.

My favorite part of the movie was near the end when Yeager took the F-104 up to try and break the record and they interspersed it with the BBQ for the atsronauts. "Lookie what I brought you" Great music. Claire de Lune I think

I never understood that part, unless it just meant that the Astronauts were just monkees and didn't do anything more than look pretty.

It was pretty clear to me:  it was a statement that while the college-educated astronauts got all the glory, it was men like Yeager who really pushed the envelope and made things happen.

Yep. And that's the way it was too. In fact, Yeager coundn't get into the astronaut program because he lacked a college degree.

Bump^

I was going to start a thread on this movie but actually did the right thing for once and searched first.

What a great movie, if you havnt you really need to read the book too. I love how the movie incorporates the "pilots prayer." I was actually a little surprized that very many people had seen this movie, thats great!

I bought the book in 1980 during a visit to the Air and Space museum in DC and the hook was set after I read chapter 1.
