I was watching the "Bastogne" episode of BoB yesterday and I just wondered what it was that Doc Roe picked up in the snow when he was out walking around by himself, right before he found all the dead soldiers. Could anybody tell what it was?

The French nurse's handkerchief that she wore around her head, if I'm remembering the correct episode.

ETA: ALRIGHT, I've been corrected enough to know that's not the part he was referring to.  So knock it off.

I remember that part, but that's not the scene I'm talking about. At the very beginning of the Bastogne episode while he's walking in the forest he picks up something out of the snow and wipes it off. It almost looks like the tip of a finger.

I should have been more descriptive in my first question.

Hmmmm...well, I don't own the series anymore, so I can't check for you.

He doesn't pick anything up.   He stops, bends down as he looks ahead and puts his hand down.   When he does this he pokes something into his finger.   He is wiping the snow off it then squeezes it to see if it is bleeding.

I think it was a body part.  I just watched it the other night.

Correct.

I just reviewed the scene. (Thanks for an excuse to watch the show again.)

He picked up her handkerchief when he went through the rubble of the hospital.

It was used to help designate different units in the 101.
Spade was 506, hearts 502, clubs 327, diamonds 501

I think they were trying to convey how heavily they had been shelled while there, there was shrapnel EVERYWHERE
