I have had a chromecast for about 2 weeks now and love it.

I got mine for $30 or so and it came with three free months of netflix. It works well from my iPhone 4 as well as my laptop, and the streaming from YouTube and netflix is excellent. I have pretty snappy WiFi and I am aware that if yours is slow you might experience some issues.

I do not have cable and this makes it really easy for me to stream movies, tv shows, and basically anything that can be opened in a browser.

The wifi antenna in mine is so weak that it barely works on most of my TVs. So far, I am underwhelmed.

I like mine for streaming the you tube videos that the munchkin likes.  Im wish you could use it on videos saved on your device or a Web browser on a tablet, but I am hopeful they will add more capability in the future.

Some home brew apps will be a long eventually.... There was one app that allowed local content to be streamed, but an update by Google killed it...

ETA:  "Chromecast does not currently support apps that stream video or audio stored locally on a mobile device. An update of Chromecast's internal software "broke" support for AllCast, an Android application that provided this function. Responding to a reporter inquiry from The Verge, Google said it "would like to support all types of apps, including those for local content" pending the production release of the device's software development kit.[27]"
